Crochet Cable Hat Pattern Materials
- A 4mm(G) crochet hook or hook needed to meet gauge
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle

Along with the above you will need the following yarn for your hat:
Timeless Tones DK, 100% Acrylic, 250m/273yds/100g
You will need approx. 175 (200, 240, 265, 300, 350, 375) m, 190 (220, 260, 290, 325, 380, 410) yds of the recommended yarn to crochet the basic cable crochet hat.
1 (1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 2) balls of the recommended yarn.
For my cable hats, I used the shades Sea Green, Steel Blue and Oat.

Yarn Substitutes
You can use any yarn that you like bearing in mind that you need to make sure you meet the gauge. Some other great options are:

Stitches
The pattern is written in standard US terms and uses the following crochet stitches:
sc – single crochet (how to single crochet stitch)
hdc – half double crochet (how to half double crochet)
tr – treble crochet
Special Stitches
flo – front loop only
To work the front loop only, turn your work so that the top is facing you to see the front and back loops. Work into the front loop by inserting the hook into the loop nearest to you.
blo – backloop only
To work the back loop only, turn your work so that the top is facing you to see the front and back loops. Work into the back loop by inserting the hook into the loop furthest from you.
FP – front post
Yarn over, insert your hook around the post of the stitch from front to back to front, yarn over and pull through a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through the remaining 2 loops on your hook.
BP – back post
Yarn over, insert your hook around the post of the stitch from back to front to back, yarn over and pull through a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through the remaining 2 loops on your hook.
hdc2tog – half double crochet 2 together
Yarn over, insert your hook, yarn over and pull through stitch, yarn over, insert your hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull through stitch, yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook.

How do you Make this Crochet Cable Hat Pattern?
- The hat is made from the bottom up.
- We begin with the Hat Band that uses sc stitches and is worked in turned rows.
- The Hat Band is joined to form a ring.
- The Main Hat Body is then worked in turned rounds into the sides of the Hat Band rows.
- With the Main Hat Body complete, we now work a number of decrease rounds at the top of the hat to shape and finish the Crown.
Pattern Gauge
Gauge: 19 sts and 16 rounds = 4″ by 4″ using 4mm hook
A gauge swatch will help you find out if your yarn and hook size will give you the tension for the hat and make it the size of the schematic.

- The pattern is worked firstly in rows for the Hat Band and then in rounds for the Main Hat Body and Crown.
- Make sure to use stitch markers at the beginning of each round so as not to lose your place.
- A ch1 at the beginning of a row or round does not count as a stitch.
- Read through the entire pattern before beginning.
- Before you start, go through the pattern and highlight/mark the stitch and row counts that correspond to the size you are making (this will make your life much easier!).
- Make sure that you are familiar with all of the stitches in the abbreviations list before you begin.
- Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each row or round. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous row.
- The count number referring to each size is laid out as follows: Newborn (Baby, Toddler, Child, Teen/Small Adult, Medium Adult, Large Adult)

HAT BAND
All Sizes
Make the Hat Band.
Foundation chain: ch 15 (17, 19, 21, 25, 25, 27) turn.
Row 1: sc in the 2nd ch from hook and each across, turn. [14 (16, 18, 20, 24, 24, 26)]
Rows 2-56 (63, 70, 77, 84, 91, 98): ch1, sc in blo of each st, turn.
At the end of the final row, join the final row to the first row with a slip stitch seam to form the Hat Band shape.
Continue for the Main Hat Body.
MAIN HAT BODY
All Sizes
This is worked in turned rounds beginning with round 1 working into the sides of the rows of the hat band.
Round 1: RS: ch1, hdc in the side of each row around the Hat Band, ss in 1st st to join, turn. [56 (63, 70, 77, 84, 91, 98)]
Round 2: ch1, hdc in flo of each st around, ss in 1st st to join, turn.
Round 3: ch1, *(hdc in next st, FPtr around next 2 sts two rounds below) twice, hdc in next st; rep from * to end, ss in 1st st to join, turn.
Round 4: Rep Round 2.
Round 5: ch1, *hdc in next st, skip next 3 sts, FPtr around next 2 Front Post sts 2 rows below, working behind the 2 sts just made hdc in 3rd skipped stitch, working in front of the sts of this round FPtr around 2 Front Post sts 2 rows below skipped sts, hdc in next st; rep from * to end, ss in 1st to join, turn.
Round 6: Rep Round 2.
Round 7: Rep Round 3.

Rounds 8-11 (11, 11, 15, 15, 19, 19): Repeat the Main Body Set Pattern.
You can change the height of your hat here by working as many or as few repeats of the Main Body Set Pattern as you’d like to. The Crown Decrease Section will add 2″ of height to each of the hats so make sure to take that into account. Once complete, continue to the Crown Decrease Section.
CROWN DECREASE SECTION
Round 1: ch1, hdc in flo of each st around, ss in 1st st to join, turn.
Round 2: ch1, *hdc in next st, skip next 3 sts, FPtr around next 2 Front Post sts 2 rows below, working behind the 2 sts just made, hdc in 3rd skipped stitch, working in front of the sts of this round FPtr around 2 Front Post sts 2 rows below skipped sts, skip next st; rep from * to end, ss in 1st to join, turn. [48 (54, 60, 66, 72, 78, 84)]
Round 3: Rep Round 1 of Crown Decrease Section.
Round 4: ch1, *hdc in next st, FPtr around next 2 sts two rounds below, skip next st, FPtr around next 2 sts two rounds below; rep from * to end, ss in 1st st to join, turn.[40 (45, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70)]
Round 5: Rep Round 1 of Crown Decrease Section.
Round 6: ch1, *skip next 3 sts, FPtr around next 2 Front Post sts 2 rows below, working in front of these sts FPtr around 2 Front Post sts 2 rows below skipped sts; rep from * to end, ss in 1st to join, turn. [32 (36, 40, 44, 48, 52, 56)]
Round 7: ch1, hdc2tog in the flo around, ss in 1st to join, turn. [16 (18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28)]
Round 8: Rep Round 7. [8 (9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14)]
FINISHING
All Sizes
Break yarn leaving a long tail to sew top of hat.
With yarn needle weave the yarn tail through every other st around.
Pull hat tight making sure the opening is fully closed. Weave the yarn in opposite directions to make sure it is secure.
Weave in all ends to finish.

Adding a pom pom
You can complete the look of your hat by securing a ready made pom pom as I have or creating your own using some yarn and a pom pom maker.
Make sure to secure the pom pom well to the top centre of the hat.
Adding a label or tag
Another great addition to your hat is a small tag to add a really professional finish.
I used custom made tags with my logo on but you can find a huge range of ready made ones to use too!
Just add them to the brim by sewing them on.
