More about this free DK crochet hat pattern

Since this hat is ribbed, it has a nice relaxed fit to it so make sure to check which size would be best. Ribbed projects can be a bit tricky because they might end up too loose (they’ve got a bit of a stretch to them) or too tight, causing the ribbing to get lost in between.

The great thing is that the pattern is so simple that you can just make it to the measurements you’d like it to make sure it’s just the right size! Even though I’ve added sizes from baby to adult in this pattern you can adjust it to any size.

You can also adjust the length of the pattern to keep it as a crochet hat with a wide brim or have a shorter brim, or none at all. It’s completely up to you!

Top of crochet hat pattern with shaping in DK weight yarn.

How do you crochet an easy unisex crochet hat like this?

The hat is worked in side to side rows with some short row shaping at the very top that creates the crown of the hat.

You’ll see from the image below that the hat is crocheted flat and is a very odd shape before you join it! The measurement of 12 inches you see is going to be the circumference of the hat and the opposite measurement will then be the height of the hat.

Once you have the desired measurement for the hat circumference you can crochet the last row to the first row and then sew the top together to form the shaping. Add a pom pom if desired, turn back the brim to wherever you’d like it and you’re done!

I think using this easy crochet rib stitch is a great way to make the hat unisex. It has a simple and classic look that suits adults and children too.

Can you crochet a hat with DK yarn?

If you’ve stumbled across this post and are wondering ‘can you crochet a hat with DK yarn?’, the short answer is yes! I think double knit weight yarn (category 3) is a great choice as it will give you a lovely soft and squishy hat that is great for Spring and Fall as well as Winter.

I know it’s fun to make big chunky yarn beanies but DK yarn creates very warm hats and don’t take as long to make as you might think!

So, if you want to know how to crochet a hat out of DK yarn for adults, children or babies then this is the one for you.

I love creating easy crochet hat patterns and so here are a few more suggestions for you and all your friends and family (and you can search my blog for many more patterns too):

Yarn

To crochet this simple ribbed hat, I used Mary Maxim Mellowspun DK (100% acrylic, 284yds, 260m/100g). For each hat, I needed 1 ball of yarn but for specific yardage, I’ve included details down below.

Child Sizes: Premature (0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months, 12-24 months, 3-10 years)

Yarn (yds): 70 (80, 90, 100, 120, 160)

Adult Sizes: Teen/Small Adult (Medium Adult, Large Adult)

Yarn (yds): 180 (200, 220)

Some great options for alternative yarns are:

Tension and Sizing

18 sts and 16 rows measure 10cm x 10cm (4″ x 4″) over main stitch repeat (4 row repeat) if you’re using a 4.5mm hook. You can adjust the hook size to obtain the correct tension. I would recommend making a gauge swatch to ensure you’re right where you need to be.

The finished hats have the following measurements:

Crochet beanie for children

Size: Premature (0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12 months, 12-24 months, 3-10 years)

To fit head (in): 12-13 (13-14, 14-15, 15-16, 16-18, 19-20)

Actual Hat Circumference (in): 10 (11, 12, 13, 14, 17)

Actual Hat Height (in): 6 (7, 8, 9.5, 10, 11)

Crochet beanie for adults

Size: Teen/Small Adult (Medium Adult, Large Adult)

To fit head (in): 21 (22, 23)

Actual Hat Circumference (in): 18 (19, 20)

Actual Hat Height (in): 12.5 (13, 13.5)

Gauge Swatch

Work a small swatch of the following to check your gauge:

Foundation chain: any number that measures more than 4″

Row 1: ch1, hdc in blo of each stitch (beginning in 2nd ch from hook on Foundation chain).

Row 2: ch1, hdc in blo of each stitch.

Row 3: ch1, ss in blo of each stitch.

Row 4: ch1, ss in blo of each stitch.

Repeat Rows 1 – 4 until your gauge swatch measures more than 4″

If you would like to use a different yarn, rather than try and meet the gauge I would adjust the stitches and rows in your hat.

Glossary and Abbreviations

ch(s) – chain(s)

sp – space

ss – slip stitch

RS – right side

WS – wrong side

rep – repeat

yoh – yarn over hook

blo – back loop only

Stitches

The hat uses the following crochet stitches:

ss – slip stitch (UK ss – slip stitch)

hdc – half double crochet (UK htr – half treble)

Special Stitches

There aren’t any special stitches particularly for this gender neutral crochet hat pattern but we will need to work stitches in the back loop only as follows;

Back Loop Only – blo

To work the back loop only; Turn your work so that the top is facing you to see the front and back loops. Work into the back loop by inserting the hook into the loop furthest from you.

Pattern Notes

A ch1 at the beginning of a row does not count as a stitch.

You will turn at the end of each row.

The hat is worked in flat rows with shaping at the top using short rows.

The last row is joined to the foundation chain to create the shape of the hat and the top sewn closed to finish.

Customisation

You can use any yarn to make this hat if you like! All you need to do is create a foundation chain the length of the ‘actual hat height’ in the sizing information.

Then follow the pattern repeat until your crochet measures the ‘actual hat circumference’ in the sizing information.

It is best to finish on the final row of the pattern repeat to make the hat as neat as possible on the join.
