More about the cable crochet headband pattern
I’ve always loved working with crochet cable stitches and I often feel like they get a bad reputation for being a bit clumsy. I’m here to show you that they can be easy and elegant.
I love working post stitches into accessories like this cable headband but also into mitts like my Orchard cable mitts, or hats like my Neo Mint cable beanie, or even into home decor like my Cable Collection pillow cover.
Cables really add a certain something extra to a project and what better place to show them off than on your head?!
A crochet headband for me is such an easy win as they are quick, simple, hardly use any yarn and make such great gifts.
Shall we make some together?!
How do you crochet a cable headband like this?
The headbands are worked in rounds after creating a ring of foundation stitches to begin with.
The cable stitch repeat is only over 4 rounds and better yet – each alternate round is just single crochet stitches! Easy peasy.
You can see the 2 different cable techniques and stitches I’ve used here. One is over 6 stitches and the other just 2. They repeat all the way around the headband and once you find your rhythm with them you’ll have no trouble at all.
Yarn
To make my version of the cable crochet headband I used Brava Worsted, 100% acrylic, 208yds/100g, Category #4 weight.
You’ll need approximately 150yds of yearn for each headband.
I often get asked about ideas for alternative yarns and so here are some great options that I think will also give you a fabulous headband.
It’s really important to choose a yarn that has good stitch definition for the cable stitches but that is also warm and cosy of course.
Here are some that I think would work really well for this pattern in various price ranges:
- Lion Brand Heartland:100% acrylic; 252yds, 230m/140g
- Sirdar Country Classic Worsted: 50% wool, 50% acrylic; 218yds, 200m/100g
- Swish Worsted by WeCrochet: 100% superwash merino wool, 110yds, 100m/50g
Tension and Sizing
The crochet headband is sized for Baby, Child and Adult
The finished headbands measure: Baby 13.5″ by 2″, Child 16.75″ by 3″, Adult 20″ by 4″.
12 sts and 16 rounds measure 10cm x 10cm (4″ x 4″) over main set pattern using a 5.5mm hook, or size needed to obtain correct tension.
Materials
Along with your yarn, you will need the following:
- A 5.5mm(I) crochet hook- my favourites are Furls Streamline Swirl crochet hooks or Clover Amour crochet hooks.
- Scissors
- Tapestry Needle

For cable stitches you’ll need to know how to work around the front and the back of a post as follows:
Back Post Crochet Stitch
To work the back post, yarn over, reaching over top of the piece and working on opposite or right side of the work, insert the hook from right to left around vertical post of next stitch, yarn over and complete the stitch.
Front Post Crochet Stitch
To work the front post, yarn over, insert hook from front to back and to front again around the vertical post (upright part) of next st, yoh and draw yarn through, yoh and complete stitch.
Pattern Notes
A ch1 at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch.
All post stitches are worked into the stitches 2 rounds below.
