This adorable crochet pumpkins pattern can be used to make pumpkins as big or small as you like, in any yarn! Create a stack of decorative pumpkins, a gorgeous pillow or add them to an autumnal wreath – the possibilities are endless!

There are four different sized pumpkins within the written pattern from small to extra large and by adjusting the yarn you use you can make them anything from 2″ – 12.5” in diameter.

With a stalk, leaf and twirls on top this easy pumpkin pattern is great for quick and simple halloween decorations too!

More about this crochet pumpkins pattern

I love easy crochet pumpkins and after designing my crochet pumpkin beanie pattern many years ago I thought it was time to create a version to decorate the house with!

I wanted the pattern to be easily adaptable to create any size you like so the four versions can be made in any weight of yarn to make small crochet pumpkins of around 2 inches in diameter to a lovely big one that you can use as a crochet pumpkin pillow!

How do you crochet a pumpkin stack?

The pattern includes instructions for a leaf and stalk to add to your pumpkin and this makes them perfect to add to an autumnal or Fall wreath but not so great it you want to make a stack of pumpkins!

So all you need to do is create the stalk and leaf for your top pumpkin of the stack and then leave it off the others. They will sit on top of each other nice and neatly.

If you want to make them into a crochet pumpkin wreath then just make a few and add them by sewing or gluing them in place. So easy and so effective!

Yarn

You can use any weight of yarn you like to make the crochet pumpkins. In the examples I show I used:

  • City Tweed DK category 3; 55% Merino Wool, 25% Superfine Alpaca, 20% Donegal Tweed, 123yds/50g
  • Brava Worsted -category 4; 100% Premium Acrylic, 208yds/100g
  • Thick and Quickcategory 6; 65% Recycled Polyester, 35% Amicor, 87yds/100g

Yarn colours: I used Snowbank, Habenero, Tarantella, Toad in City Tweed DK and Persimmon, Dublin, Fig, Brindle in Brava Worsted.

Each pumpkin uses between 60 and 100yds of yarn for the main pumpkin and 20 to 50yds for the stalk and leaf.

The pattern is completely adjustable for each yarn weight and the exact amount required will depend on the particular yarn you choose.

Yarn Substitutes

You can use any yarn for your pumpkins! Some other great options are:

Materials

Along with your yarn, you will need the following:

What size crochet hook for pumpkins?

The size of crochet hook you use will depend on the weight of yarn you choose. As gauge isn’t essential for this project you just need one that gives you tight enough stitches that you won’t see the stuffing poking out!

Here are the sizes I would suggest trying for each yarn weight:

  • Category 3 (DK or sport weight) = 3.5mm/E crochet hook
  • Category 4 (Worsted or Aran weight) = 4.5mm/G+
  • Category 5 (Chunky or Bulky) = 6.5mm/K
  • Category 6 (Super Bulky) = 8mm/L

Special Stitches

The pumpkins are made by using some fun post stitches and some decreases too.

FPdcFront Post Double Crochet

Yarn over hook, insert hook from front to back to front around post of desired stitch below, yarn over hook and pull up a loop, yarn over hook and pull through 2 loops on the hook, yarn over hook and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

BPdc – Back Post Double Crochet

Yarn over hook, insert hook from back to front to back around post of desired stitch below, yarn over hook and pull up a loop, yarn over hook and pull through 2 loops on the hook, yarn over hook and pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Dc2tog – Double Crochet 2 Together

(Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops on the hook) 2 times, yarn over and pull through all loops on hook to complete stitch. This decreases your stitch count by 1.

When any decrease stitches involve a front post stitch from the previous round make sure to work the corresponding part of the new stitch around this front post too.

The pattern is worked in rounds from the top down with the bottom decreasing to close once stuffed.

A ch1 at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch throughout.

You can begin each round with either a ch1 and then work into the first stitch or a stacked double crochet stitch, whichever you prefer.

The pattern is written in US terms.

Customising your crochet pumpkins

Not only are there four sizes within the written pattern of pumpkins to make but you can also easily adjust their height by working more or less rounds of the Body.

You can adjust the ‘roundness’ of them by adding more or less stuffing.

The Stalk is adjustable by working more or less rounds of the Stalk to change the height.

You can easily change the length of the Twirls by working more or less chains as you begin them. Remember that they will become shorter as they ‘twirl’ back though.

Crochet Pumpkin Leaf and Stalk Pattern

I made the Leaf and Stalk the same size for all of my pumpkins but you can make yours any size you like!

Just increase or decrease the rounds that you work for the Stalk as you’d like it and then add as many chains as you need for the greenery!

STALK

Using a contrast colour make a Magic Ring. Leave a tail long enough to sew to pumpkin.

Round 1: 6sc into Magic Ring [6]. Work in continuous rounds now.

Rounds 2-5: sc in each st around. Do not break yarn.

Slip stitch into 1st st at the end of the final Round. Then begin Twirls and Leaf Section.

TWIRLS

Option 1: Continue with yarn from Stalk, *ch19, ss in 2nd ch from hook and each ch to end, ss in same st of stalk, ss in next 2sts of stalk.

Repeat from * for the Second Twirl.

Option 2: work 2sc instead of ss for a tighter twirl.

Do not break yarn.

LEAF

Continue with yarn from Twirls, ch10, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 2chs, hdc in next 3chs, dc in next 3chs, ss into side of dc just worked, ss into st of stalk that has the leaf attached, ch1, rotate to work in unworked side of ch10; dc in next 3chs, hdc in next 3chs, sc in next 3chs. Break yarn.

Using your tail, sew Stalk into place on the top of the pumpkin as shown. Weave in all ends to complete.
