Video Tutorial for the Summer Crochet Top

Come along as I make the short sleeve crochet top pattern and see just how easy it is in our step-by-step video tutorial.

Crochet T Shirt Pattern Materials

Along with the above you will need the following yarn for your summer top:

Gloss DK by WeCrochet, 70% Merino Wool, 30% Silk (123yds / 112m / 50g). I used Moonlight for my simple crochet top.

You will require approximately 720 (760, 845, 930, 1000) (1080, 1180, 1265, 1370) metres, 790 (830, 925, 1015, 1090) (1180, 1290, 1385, 1495) yards of yarn to crochet the t shirt. This is 7 (7, 8, 9, 9) (10, 11, 12, 13) balls of the recommended yarn.

It’s a category 3, light weight yarn which is what gives this top such beautiful drape. Check out our handy yarn weight chart and guide to find out more about yarn weights and categories.

Yarn Substitutes

You can use any yarn that you like bearing in mind that you need to make sure you meet the gauge. Some other great options are:

  • Willow Yarns Wisp, 45% Acrylic, 30% Alpaca, 25% Wool (267yds / 244m / 100g)
  • Mellowspun DK, 100% Acrylic (284yds / 260m / 100g)
  • Swish DK, 100% Superwash Fine Merino Wool (123yds / 112m / 50g)

Glossary and Abbreviations

Stitches

The pattern is written in standard US terms and uses the following crochet stitches:

yo slst – yarn over slip stitch

tr – treble crochet

Special Stitches

TREBLE CROCHET (tr)

Step 1: Yarn over hook 2 times.

Step 2: Insert hook into desired stitch to work into.

Step 3: Yarn over hook and pull through (4 loops on the hook now).

Step 4: Yarn over hook and pull through the first two loops on the hook (3 loops on the hook now).

Step 5: Yarn over hook and pull through the first two loops on the hook (2 loops on the hook now).

Step 6: Yarn over hook and pull through the remaining two loops on the hook to complete the stitch (1 loop on the hook now).

TREBLE CROCHET 2 TOGETHER (tr2tog)

Work as for Treble to end of Step 5. Then work Steps 1 – 5 into next stitch.

Final Step: Yarn over hook and pull through the remaining three loops on the hook to complete the stitch (1 loop on the hook now).

Making Your Simple Crochet Top Perfect For You

The top is designed to have 5-6″ of ease so that it sits comfortably on your body but you can change it to be looser or closer fitting if you’d like to. The simple shaping means that you can just select a larger or smaller size to make.

Adjust The Top Length:

To make the top longer add an even amount of stitches to your foundation chain.

To make the top shorter subtract an even amount of stitches from your foundation chain.

The Front and Back are worked in one panel so you must remember to adjust when you begin your neckline if you change the length.

Underarm Seams: Seam as much or as little as you like from the bottom of Top towards the shoulder to create your armholes as you would like them.

Pattern Gauge

Gauge: 17 sts x 8 rows = 4″ x 4″ measured over main set pattern (Rows 2 and 3).

Making a crochet gauge swatch is important when crocheting projects like garments to ensure that it ends up the desired size.

Before you jump into crocheting your t shirt, take a moment to read through the pattern notes—it’s a game-changer!

These handy insights will not only simplify your pattern-reading journey but also ensure a smoother crochet experience. You’ll find helpful tips on deciphering the sizing, customisation and more.

Trust me, a quick peek at these notes will set you up for crochet success!

  • A ch1 at the beg does not count as a st.
  • Work either a stacked treble or ch4 as desired at the beginning of a treble crochet row. This counts as a stitch.
  • The pattern is worked in turned rows.
  • Read through the entire pattern before beginning.
  • Before you start, go through the pattern and highlight/mark the stitch and row counts that correspond to the size you are making (this will make your life much easier!).
  • Make sure that you are familiar with all of the stitches in the abbreviations list before you begin.
  • Instructions are given for the smallest size, with larger sizes in brackets ( ). E.g. XS (S, M, L, XL), (2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL).
  • If an instruction does not apply to a particular size then a – is used instead of a number. E.g. – (-, 4, 4, 5) (5, 5, 6, 6) means that the XS and S sizes do not apply to this instruction.
  • Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each Row. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous Row.
  • Make sure to check your gauge before beginning using the Gauge Swatch instructions to ensure the garment meets the desired measurements.

SIDE SEAMS

All Sizes

Fold in half at the shoulder and join the side seams as follows:

With RS facing and a ss seam, skip bottom 8 sts, join next 63 (61, 61, 59, 59) (56, 55, 53, 53) sts, leaving remaining sts open for armhole.

You can adjust the size of your armhole by joining more or less stitches as you prefer.

SLEEVE CUFFS

All Sizes

You can now add Sleeve Cuffs using a Join As You Go Method.

This allows you to tighten the cuffs as much or as little as you like by adjusting how many stitches you join to each time you return to the Sleeve end.

With RS facing and using smaller hook, join yarn to st at seam of Sleeve end. Ch5 (or however long you’d like your cuff).

Row 1: yo slst in 2nd ch from hook, yo slst in next remaining chs, ss in side of next st of Sleeve, turn. [4]

Row 2: yo slst in blo of each st, turn.

Row 3: ch1, yo slst in blo of each st, ss in next 2 sts of Sleeve, turn.

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 around until you have worked into the sides of all stitches of the Sleeve.

Join the last row to the first row with a ss seam.  Repeat for the second Sleeve.

NECK BAND

All Sizes

Using the same Join As You Go Method as the Sleeve Cuffs, repeat around the neckline. Joining to the sides of stitches when required.

Using smaller hook, join yarn to begin at the Back to the side of centre where the shoulder is. This is the best place to hide the seam but you can begin elsewhere if you wish.

Once complete, weave in all ends and block lightly again to complete.
