This pumpkin coaster crochet pattern is a fun little autumn project that actually started life as a motif for my Fall Into Place autumn crochet blanket. As soon as I designed the pumpkin, though, I knew it would make the cutest little coaster too! 🎃
We love dotting coasters around our home, and these are such an easy way to add a little handmade fall crochet decor without going completely pumpkin-crazy (although no judgement here 😂). Make one, make a set, or use the motif as part of the full blanket. 🍂
Pumpkin Coaster Crochet Pattern
The pumpkin coaster crochet pattern uses overlay mosaic crochet, with just a tiny amount of green for the stalk, and is finished with a neat little envelope border. Make one, make a whole set, use the crochet pumpkin motif for something completely different – or, of course, come and make the whole Fall Into Place blanket with me. 🍂

If you’ve arrived here ready to crochet the pumpkin section of your Fall Into Place Blanket, you’re in exactly the right place! 🎃
Before you begin, make sure you’ve worked through the setup information on the main crochet autumn blanket pattern and follow the same process as you work through your pumpkin rows.
The written pumpkin instructions below are the motif you’ll use for Section 2 – Pumpkins, but you’ll need to follow the blanket information for your stitch count, colours, repeats and overall construction.
The blanket is worked continuously in one piece, so there’s no need to make each section separately. Simply join your yarn with your hook in the first stitch where you left off and continue straight into the Pumpkin section. 🎃

Free Crochet Pumpkin Pattern Materials
- A 4.5mm(G+) crochet hook or hook needed to meet gauge
- Scissors

Timeless Tones DK, 100% Acrylic, 250m/273yds/100g
The great thing about scrap yarn crochet ideas like this is that they use barely any yarn!
For the full set of coasters (pumpkin, mushroom, acorn and leaves) you will need a total of:
Approximately 200 yds (183m) of your Main Colour (MC): 1 ball of recommended yarn.
Approximately 60yds (55m) of each Contrast Colour (CC1-7): 1 ball of each recommended yarn.
I used the shades MC: Oatmilk, CC1: Soft Thyme, CC4: Pumpkin Spice and CC5: Olive Grove to crochet this little pumpkin!

Stitches
The pattern is written in standard US terms and uses the following crochet stitches:
sc – single crochet (how to single crochet stitch)
Mdc – Mosaic double crochet (how to work a mosaic double crochet)
Special Stitches
SINGLE CROCHET (sc) always worked in back loop only (blo).
Insert hook from front to back through back loop of stitch to be worked. Yarn over and pull through stitch. Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook.
MOSAIC DOUBLE CROCHET (Mdc)
Yarn over and insert hook into front loop of stitch two rounds below. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. Yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook.* Yarn over and pull through remaining two loops on the hook.
The stitch behind the Mdc on the current round is left unworked.

MOSAIC DOUBLE CROCHET 2 TOGETHER (Mdc2tog) – current and next st
Begin working a Mdc in the current st but stop at *. Now begin another Mdc in the next st and complete by yarning over and pulling through all the loops on the hook.
MOSAIC DOUBLE CROCHET 2 TOGETHER (Mdc2tog) – previous and current st
Begin working a Mdc in the previous st but stop at *. Now begin another Mdc in the current st and complete by yarning over and pulling through all the loops on the hook.
2 MOSAIC DOUBLE CROCHET (2Mdc)
Work two mosaic double crochet stitches in the front loop of the stitch 2 rounds below. In the heart motif this helps to shape the sides. It does not increase the stitch count as you will be skipping a stitch either before or after.

FOUNDATION SINGLE CROCHET (Fsc)
- Step 1: Ch 2, insert hook into second ch from hook, yarn over and pull up a loop. [2 loops on hook]
- Step 2: Yarn over and pull up another loop i.e. ch1. This creates the first “chain” in your foundation row. [still 2 loops on hook]
- Step 3: Yarn over and pull through both loops to complete the first Fsc.
- Step 4: Next stitch and subsequent stitches: Insert hook into “chain” created in Step 2 (step 5 on subsequent stitches), yarn over and pull up a loop. [2 loops on hook]
- Step 5: Yarn over and pull up another loop i.e. ch1. This creates the next “chain” in your foundation row. [still 2 loops on hook]
- Step 6: Yarn over and pull through both loops to complete the next Fsc.
- Repeat Steps 4, 5 and 6 as required.
Pattern Gauge
Gauge: 18 sts and 18 rows = 4″ by 4″ using 4.5mm hook
A gauge swatch will help you find out if your yarn and hook size will give you the tension for the coaster and make it the size of the schematic.

- The pattern is worked in rows using the overlay mosaic crochet technique for the Main Panel.
- The Main Panel requires you to break your yarn at the end of each row, then with the RS facing rejoin your next colour of yarn in the first stitch of the row just worked.
- All stitches in the Mosaic Sections are worked as sc in blo or Mdc, except for the first and last st of each row.
- Each row uses just one colour apart from a few stitches as detailed.
- A ch1 at the beginning or end of a row does not count as a stitch.
- Read through the entire pattern before beginning.
- Make sure that you are familiar with all of the stitches in the abbreviations list before you begin.
- Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each row. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous row.

NOTES
Throughout the pattern break the yarn at the end of each row. With the RS facing join the next colour of yarn to the first st of the previous row.
The first and last stitches of every row are worked into the full part of the stitch (indicated by a ‘V’ on the chart).

Add A Border To Your Coaster
Once the Main Body of the coaster is complete you can then decide on how you would like to work the border.
There are a few options for this:
- Create a tassel border
- Weave in your ends and do not add a border
- Add an envelope border
I added an envelope border to each of mine but the choice is yours of course.
Optional Tassel Border
If you would like to add a tassel edge rather than an envelope border then you can do so now.
With the RS facing you, gather approximately 2 or 3 tails at a time and secure into a simple knot. Repeat this process along both sides of the blanket. Trim the tassels to the length of your choice.
Envelope Border
Before beginning the envelope border, tie ends at sides of rows in sets of two to secure and trim short (approx a third of an inch).
With the RS facing, use your MC to work a slip stitch border around the edge of the Main Panel
Slip Stitch Border: With RS facing, join MC to blo of 2nd st from top right corner, ss in 20 sts (leaving 1 remaining at end of row), ch1, rotate to work along side of Main Panel now.
Working in between the last and second to last st of the row, ss in each row to bottom left hand corner, ch1.
Ss in blo of 20 stitches of the first row of the Main Panel, ch1, rotate to work along side of Main Panel now.
Working in between the first and second st of the row, ss in each row to top right hand corner, ch1, ss in 1st to join.
FRONT BORDER – all sc worked in blo
Round 1: MC: ch1, sc in each ss to next ch1, (sc, ch1, sc) in ch1, *sc in each ss to next ch1, (sc, ch1, sc) in ch1; rep from * around, ss in 1st to join.
Round 2: CC1: ch1, sc in each st to next ch1, (sc, ch1, sc) in ch1, *sc in each st to next ch1, (sc, ch1, sc) in ch1; rep from * around, ss in 1st to join. Break yarn.
BACK BORDER
With WS facing we now need to repeat the instructions for the Front Border (in any colur sequence you like) with Round 1 into the remaining loops on the opposite side of the Slip Stitch Border.
At the end of Round 2 change to MC and continue to join the Front and Back Borders.
JOIN THE FRONT AND BACK BORDERS
With the WS facing and your choice of yarn colour (I used the MC), join the Front Border to the Back Border using a slip stitch seam in the back loops of corresponding stitches.
Break yarn and weave in ends to finish.
🍂 Crochet Pumpkin Blanket Section
If you are making the Fall Into Place Blanket and want to add the mosaic pumpkin motif then here’s how to do it! As you probably already know, you can use this 18 row section at any point in your blanket, just start working the first row directly onto your blanket after you finish your previous section.
All of the notes above still apply when working the pumpkin section of your blanket, but here’s a quick recap before you begin:
- Break your yarn at the end of every row. With the RS facing, join the next colour to the first stitch of the previous row.
- First and last stitch: Work through the full stitch (shown as a ‘V’ on the chart).
- All other sc: Work in the BLO throughout the mosaic section.
- Mdc: Mosaic double crochet (shown as an ‘X’ on the chart).
- Colours: MC = Main Colour, CC1–7 = Contrast Colours 1–7.
- Follow either the Mosaic Chart or the written instructions below.
Row 1: MC: ch1, sc in each st across.
Row 2: CC4: ch1, sc in each st across.
Row 3: MC: ch1, sc in next st, *Mdc in next 7 sts, sc in next 2 sts, Mdc in next st, sc in next st, Mdc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, Mdc in next 6 sts; rep from * across to last st, sc in last st.
