When it comes to crochet accessories, I love nothing more than whipping up a quick headband as a gift! They take hardly any time at all, are great for all ages and are perfect for using up that yarn stash.
There’s one more thing that crocheting a headband is great for…..learning new stitches!
That’s why I’m thrilled to introduce the Deidra Headband. It’s part of a collection of short row crochet patterns using this short row technique that looks super tricky but is in fact easy to master.
This ear warmer is the one to crochet first – it’s just a rectangle that we twist and seam in the middle to create the headband!
In this post you’ll find everything you need to know how to crochet a twisted headband, including materials, stitches, a detailed video tutorial and free written pattern for blog subscribers.
This crochet twisted headband features the same stunning faux cable pattern as the Deidra Sweater – a crochet crop sweater pattern free on the blog.
Plus there’s also a new hat, mitts and poncho, all featuring the same stunning stitch pattern!

Crochet Twisted Headband Construction
- The headband is made from the bottom up in flat rows.
- We work a number of plain stitches at the beginning and end of each row to shape for the Centre Twist.
- When the desired height is reached, the two ends are twisted and sewn in place to create the Centre Twist.
- You can adjust the circumference and height of your ear warmer by working more/less stitches and more/less rows.
- You can also adjust the weight of yarn you use and work to the measurements of the schematic.

How to Crochet a Gauge Swatch
Making a crochet gauge swatch is particularly important when crocheting projects (and even more so for garments) to ensure that it ends up the desired size. It will help you practice your stitches and make sure your drape is perfect too.
Adjust your hook size to get your swatch as close to the gauge measurements as you can.

Making Your Crochet Ear Warmer Perfect For You
If you would like to adjust the circumference of your ear warmer then add or subtract any multiple of 6 stitches from your Foundation Chain. When working the pattern keep your Centre Twist stitches as per the pattern as 6 either end and adjust the rest according to the number of stitches you choose to work.
If you would like to adjust the height of your ear warmer you can work as many or as few repeats of Rows 2-5 as you like before joining the Centre Twist at the end.
