Stitches

dc – double crochet (double crochet tutorial)
Special Stitches
Foundation Single Crochet (Fsc)
Step 1: Ch2, insert hook into second ch from hook, yarn over and pull up a loop. [2 loops on hook]
Step 2: Yarn over and pull up another loop i.e. ch1. This creates the first “chain” in your foundation row. [still 2 loops on hook]
Step 3: Yarn over and pull through both loops to complete the first Fsc.
Step 4: Next stitch and subsequent stitches: Insert hook into “chain” created in Step 2 (step 5 on subsequent stitches), yarn over and pull up a loop. [2 loops on hook]
Step 5: Yarn over and pull up another loop i.e. ch1. This creates the next “chain” in your foundation row. [still 2 loops on hook]
Step 6: Yarn over and pull through both loops to complete the next Fsc.
Repeat Steps 4, 5 and 6 as required.
Stacked Double Crochet
This is an alternative to a starting chain and gives a much neater and straighter edge to your work.
Insert hook into first stitch, yoh and pull through stitch. Yoh and pull through both loops (sc created). Insert hook into side of sc just made, yoh and pull through. Yoh and pull through both loops.
How to Customise my Crochet Beach Bag
- Make your Bag taller by repeating the Main Set Pattern (rows 4-9 of side panels) as many times as you like before joining the pieces.
- Make sure to do this on both Side Panels and both End Panels.
- Make your Straps any length you like by adjusting the length of the first row.
Pattern Gauge: 16 sts and 18 rows = 4”by 4” of single crochet but gauge isn’t essential as long as you are happy with the size of your bag.
Making a crochet gauge swatch is important when crocheting projects to ensure that it ends up the desired size.
This is also a great way to get used to the stitches used in the project and practise getting your stitches nice and neat.

- The bag can be adjusted in height by working more rows of the main pattern repeat.
- The straps can be made to any length you like.
- Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each Row. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous Row.

Rows 10-27: Repeat Main Set Pattern.
Rows 28-30: Rep Rows 4-6.
At the end of Row 30 break the yarn.
END PANELS
Make 2.
Row 1: Using A, Fsc 21, turn. [21]
Rows 2-30: Work as Rows 2-30 of Side Panels.
At the end of Row 30 break the yarn.
STRAPS
Make 2. If you would like to adjust your strap length then do so by working more or less sts for row 1. We need 100 of these sts to work into the body of the bag so the remaining sts will be the length of the handle.
Row 1: Using B, Fsc 200, turn. [200]
Rows 2-9: ch1, sc in each st across, turn.
At the end of Row 9 break the yarn.
If you’re enjoying this mesh effect, have a go at the Verona filet crochet t shirt.
Before joining, I would recommend lightly blocking each of the 7 pieces gently. We have the following pieces:
- A base
- 2 side panels
- 2 end panels
- 2 straps

To begin joining, with RS facing position an End Panel, a Strap and a Side Panels as follows:
Using yarn B, work a sc seam to the RS to join the side of the rows of the End Panel to the 50 sts of the Strap as shown above (arrow 1). This is worked from the bottom of the bag upwards, work 30 sts evenly. Break the yarn when complete.
Now working from the top of the bag downwards, join the Strap using the same method to the side of the Side Panel (shown as arrow 2 above).
Next we need to continue with the same Handle by folding it over to meet the other side of the Side Panel as follows:
Once you have folded the Handle over, use the same method to join the Side Panel and Strap following the direction of arrow 3 on the diagram.
Now we need to add the next End Panel. Position it as follows and join in the direction of arrow 4 using the same method.
We are now ready to add the next Handle, Side Panel and End Panel. Position them as follows and join in the directions of arrows 5, 6 and 7 using the same method. Then following arrow 8 join the Strap to the first End Panel that we began with.
The Base can now be added. Place it in the space at the bottom of the bag with RS facing out and using B, join with a sc seam to the bottom of the Panels and Straps working in the round. Slip stitch in your first st to join at the end of the round.
This is shown in detail in the video tutorial.
To finish, with RS facing, join B to any 1st st of a Panel at the top of the bag. Work a ss in each sc across the Panel, ch9, skip the strap and with the ch9 on the inside of the bag continue to work a ss in each sc of the next Panel.
Continue to do this around the top of the bag, ss in 1st st to join.
Break the yarn. Weave in ends to complete.
