Yarn
West Yorkshire Spinners Signature 4ply yarn (75% wool, 25% nylon, 100g/400m) in the colors Hydrangea (335), Bluebell Mist (1022), Honeysuckle (234).
These are my colors A, B, and C respectively and I needed 1 ball of each.
It’s a category 1, fingering weight yarn which is what gives the socks their fine detail. Find out more about yarn weights and categories with our handy yarn weight chart.
Yarn Substitutes
Alternatively, here are some other yarns that would also work really well to crochet these socks:
- Hawthorne Fingering Yarn (80% Fine Superwash Highland Wool, 20% Polyamide (Nylon); 357yds/100g)
- Stroll Fingering (75% Fine Superwash Merino Wool, 25% Nylon; 211m/50g)
How Do you Make a Crochet Sock?
These crochet socks are worked starting from the toe and there are different mosaic sections throughout. The socks are made in continuous rounds so you won’t be joining at the end of every round which helps avoid a nasty looking seam.
Crochet socks are typically worked in five sections:
- Toe – Shaped to fit the foot comfortably.
- Foot – Worked to the length of your foot measurement.
- Heel – This pattern uses an afterthought heel, added after the leg is complete for easier fit adjustment.
- Leg – Can be worked to ankle, crew, or knee length.
- Cuff – Finished to help the sock stay in place.
I know it looks like there’s a lot happening in these socks but you’ll only be using basic stitches to accomplish their construction and you only ever use one color per round!
Sizing
The socks measure 20 (21.5) cm/ 7.75 (8.5″) in circumference around the foot and fit UK shoe size 3-5 (6-8). They are in ankle (2.75″), standard (5.75″) and knee length (12.5″).

Other Materials
Along with your yarn, you will need the following:
- 3mm (US C/2 or D/3) crochet hook
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch markers

Stitches
The socks use the following crochet stitches:
sc – single crochet (how to do a single crochet)
hdc – half double crochet (half double crochet stitch for beginners)
dc – double crochet (how to make a double crochet)
Special Stitches
SINGLE CROCHET (sc) always worked in back loop only (blo).
Insert hook from front to back through stitch to be worked. Yarn over and pull through stitch. Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook.
Yarn over and insert hook into front loop of stitch two rounds below. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. Yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook.* Yarn over and pull through remaining two loops on the hook.
The stitch behind the Mdc on the current round is left unworked.
Pattern Gauge
To crochet these socks, 24 sts and 28 rounds measure 10 x 10cm (4x4in) in the mosaic pattern using a 3mm hook, or the size needed to obtain correct tension.
Making a crochet gauge swatch is particularly important when crocheting projects (and even more so for garments) to ensure that it ends up the desired size.
Before you jump into crocheting your knee high socks, take a moment to read through the pattern notes—it’s a game-changer!
These handy insights will not only simplify your pattern-reading journey but also ensure a smoother crochet experience. You’ll find helpful tips on deciphering the sizing, customisation and more.
Trust me, a quick peek at these notes will set you up for crochet success!
- The crochet sock pattern are worked from the Toe up. The Toe is worked in a continuous spiral without closing off each round with a slip st.
- You may find it useful to mark the first st of the round, moving it up as you go.
- The Foot and Leg section are worked using the overlay mosaic technique. All rounds are worked in one colour.
- Where a second colour appears in a round, this is worked in the next round by making a US double crochet into the unused flo 2 rounds below (Mdc – mosaic double crochet).
- A space is worked for Heel to be worked into at the end.
- The socks are written with the smallest size first and the largest size in brackets.
