Wanderers Mosaic Crochet Blanket Pattern Overview

The Wanderers Blanket was designed to celebrate colour, texture, and geometry in a project that feels both modern and timeless.

The bold motifs work beautifully in solid or variegated yarn combinations, making this a fantastic choice if you’ve been looking for a variegated yarn crochet blanket pattern that really lets your colours shine.

Inset Mosaic Crochet Blankets – why are they so great?

I first came across the inset mosaic crochet technique a few years ago when I designed a cushion for Little Box of Crochet (using this same motif idea) and ever since then I have had this idea in my head for a mosaic crochet blanket.

I wanted to use a similar vibe of a complex looking repeated geometric design that also had the element of colour changes making it look like an optical illusion. I’m so pleased with how it turned out and want to make one in another colour combination already!

If you’ve never tried the mosaic crochet technique before then I’m sure you will love it. It’s not as tricky as it might look and I’ve put together some step by step pictures of it to help you out too.

One of the best things about inset mosaic crochet is just how satisfying it is to work. You only use one colour per row, so there’s no juggling multiple strands at once, and there’s no need to cut your yarn at the end of every row either. Instead, you simply carry the yarn up the side of your project as you go, which means far fewer ends to weave in when you’re finished.

Bold geometric colourwork and hardly any yarn tails? That sounds like a crochet win to me!

Variegated Crochet Blanket Pattern Materials

Along with the above you will need the following yarn for your blanket:

Mellowspun DK from Mary Maxim, 100% Acrylic (260m/284yds/100g) – shown in White.

and

Prism DK from Mary Maxim, 100% Acrylic (265m/290yds/100g) – shown in Denim Blues.

You will require approximately 1380 yards of yarn A to crochet the blanket. 5 balls of the recommended yarn A.

You will also require approximately 1260 yards of yarn B. 5 balls of the recommended yarn B.

It’s a category 3, double knit weight yarn which is what gives the blanket it’s light and delicate feel. Find out more about yarn weights and categories with our handy yarn weight chart.

Finding the right yarn for your projects can be tricky sometimes and depends on so many things like fibre content, yarn weight, budget, colour choices and more. I’ve put together a guide for the best yarn for crochet blankets to help you discover the things I’ve learnt over the years as both a designer and maker that help me choose the perfect one.
