Free Crochet Beanie Pattern – The Slip Stitch Beanie

Today I’m delighted to share with you this free crochet beanie pattern I’ve just finished designing! It’s called the Slip Stitch Beanie and it’s so simple and stylish. It comes in 10 sizes from Preemie to Large Adult so you can make one for absolutely everyone you know! I’m also including a little step by step tutorial to show you how to seam a hat together too.

You can carry on reading to find the free version of the pattern within this blogpost or purchase a PDF copy of the slip stitch crochet beanie pattern in my store.

About the Slip Stitch Beanie

The thing I wanted to achieve most with this design is that it would fit and suit absolutely anyone! I wanted to create a simple crochet beanie that anyone could make and could be their ‘go to’ pattern.

The size, colour, length, turn up and styling (I think it would look awesome with a massive bobble too!) are entirely up to you to make this really unique. I see the pattern as a blueprint for you to let your imagination run wild and customise for whoever you are making it for.

So whether you are making for men, women, children, babies, charity, stocking fillers, full-on winter pom pom hat, or simple and delicate for Autumn and Spring, this easy crochet beanie has you covered.

Yarn

I used Paintbox Simply Aran by Paintbox Yarns to make my hats which is 100% acrylic/100g/184m and lovely to work with.

A great alternative is Deramores Studio DK Aran which is 100% acrylic/100g/165m so slightly different but my swatches worked out the same but make sure you check before you start!

Yarn quantities – please refer to the sizing table below.

Materials

Along with the yarn to make your crochet beanie you will also need:

6mm (US J) crochet hook – my favourites are Furls Streamline Swirl crochet hooks or Clover Amour crochet hooks.
Tapestry needle
Scissors
Stitch markers if desired

Notes

The beanie is made by working a panel of fabric in rows. The final row is then seamed to the foundation chain and the top gathered and sewn to create the hat.

A ch1 at the beginning of a row does not count as a stitch.

Turn your work at the end of each row.

ss – slip stitch st(s) – stitch(es)

How to Seam Your Simple Crochet Beanie

Once you have made your rectangle of fabric, you need to seam it together to form the hat shape. It’s really easy I promise! Here’s a little guide about how to do it:

Step 1 – Line up and join the stitches of the last row to the stitches of the foundation chain using a slip stitch seam.

Step 2 – Cut the end of the yarn leaving a tail long enough to sew with and sew along the side of the rows now to create the hat shape.

Step 3 – Gather together the top of the hat by pulling the yarn tight.

Step 4 – Sew the end in and secure tightly. Turn the hat right way round and turn up the cuff to finish.

I love the look of the hat! But I have a question . The chain one doesn’t count as a stitch, so do you end up with a slip stitch over a slip and a single into a single? Or do you work a slip in a single and a single in the slip below? Thanks
