About the Christmas Crochet Gnomes Pattern
I designed this crochet gnome pattern for Simply Crochet magazine back in 2015 and have been so overwhelmed by how popular they have been since then!
I find that there’s something so special about creating for the festive season and my approach to Christmas crochet is that more is more! I love yarn bombing our house every year with crochet that I’ve made over the years. It makes me so happy.
Browse through these easy Christmas crochet patterns for more inspiration!
These fabulous crochet gnomes are the perfect addition to your crochet collection and you’ll have them made in no time at all.
My Mum recently made a set but has spent five years telling me she was worried the pattern and amigurumi method would be too hard! Turns out she found them really easy and is now planning more amigurumi crochet projects!
So if you’re new to amigurumi and want to try them then I say go for it!
Yarn
Starlette from Mary Maxim, 100% Acrylic, worsted weight (180yds/165m/100g)
Check out our handy yarn weight chart and guide to find out more about yarn weights and categories.
See my other worsted weight crochet patterns– you might find your next project there too!
The great thing about these little crochet gonks is that you can also make them in any yarn weight you like! They work brilliantly in double kit yarn and I haven’t tried yet but bet they are fabulous in chunky yarn! Imagine how big and cuddly they would be!

Sizing
The gnomes can be any size you like!
Worsted weight yarn approx: Large: 21.5″ high x 6″ base
Small: 18″ high x 4.5″ base
Use DK weight to make them smaller – here are the 2 I made in DK yarn 🙂

How Do You Crochet a Gnome?
The gnomes are work in parts using almost exclusively single crochet stitches.
The body is made first before being stuffed and closed.
The hat, arms and legs are then made before assembling together.
Pattern Gauge
Gauge: not essential, small gnome base = 4.5″ (worsted weight yarn)
Before you jump into crocheting your little gnome, take a moment to read through the pattern notes—it’s a game-changer!
These handy insights will not only simplify your pattern-reading journey but also ensure a smoother crochet experience. You’ll find helpful tips on deciphering the sizing, customisation and more.
Trust me, a quick peek at these notes will set you up for crochet success!
- The pattern is worked in continuous rounds.
- Each Round uses just one colour, use a stitch marker at the start of each round to keep track of where you are.
- The main body is worked in the back loop only. The rest of the pattern is worked in the full part of the stitch.
- Read through the entire pattern before beginning.
- Make sure that you are familiar with all of the stitches in the abbreviations list before you begin.
- Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each round. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous round.
- Make sure to add the beard before the hat so that it looks like it has slipped down over the top – it’s very tricky to add the beard afterwards!

TO MAKE UP
ARMS AND LEGS
If you haven’t already, attach the arms and legs as detailed in the pattern at the positions you would like them.
BEARD
Using some unworked white wool roving, create the beard and needle felt or glue onto the top of the body before adding the hat.
HAT
Sew or glue the hat in place, over the top of the beard so that it looks as though it’s covered up the eyes.
NOSE
Using a small amount of cream wool roving, create a ball for the nose and sew or glue into place.
VIDEO TUTORIAL
The video tutorial shows adding these elements if you would like to see how I did it.
