Crochet Stocking Pattern Materials
- crochet hook 5mm (H) for the rib and 5.5mm (I) for the toe, main body and heel or hook needed to meet gauge
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch markers
Along with the above you will need the following yarn for your stocking:
Plain yarn: Starlette, 100% Acrylic, 180yds/165m/100g (one strand)
Variegated yarn: Prism DK, 100% Acrylic, 265m/290yds/100g (held doubled throughout)
Yarn A: Each size needs 1 ball of yarn. Approx 110yds. This is assuming Yarn A is only used for the main body of the stocking.
Yarn B: Each size needs 1 ball of yarn. Approx 150yds. This is assuming Yarn B is used for the toe, main body, heel and cuff.
I used a combination of yarns in my stockings – some use a worsted weight yarn with 2 strands of DK yarn used in them too. This is s great pattern to experiment and have fun with colours and yarn!

Stitches
The pattern is written in standard US terms and uses the following crochet stitches:
sc – single crochet (how to single crochet stitch)
Mdc – mosaic double crochet (mosaic double crochet tutorial)
What is Overlay Mosaic Crochet?
Overlay mosaic crochet is a colourwork technique that creates striking geometric designs while working with just one colour at a time. Rather than carrying multiple yarns across each row, you alternate colours every round and use mosaic double crochet stitches to create the decorative pattern.
Although the finished stocking looks intricate, the technique uses just two basic stitches—single crochet and mosaic double crochet—making it much easier than it first appears.
Special Stitches
SINGLE CROCHET (sc) always worked in back loop only (blo).
Insert hook from front to back through back loop of stitch to be worked. Yarn over and pull through stitch. Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook.

MOSAIC DOUBLE CROCHET (Mdc)
Yarn over and insert hook into front loop of stitch two rounds below. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. Yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through remaining two loops on the hook.
The stitch behind the Mdc on the current round is left unworked.

How do you Make this Christmas crochet stocking pattern?
The stocking is made from the Toe up, with an afterthought Heel and a Join As You Go Cuff to finish.
The Foot and Leg are made using overlay mosaic crochet in the round.
Designer’s Tip: If you’re choosing colours for overlay mosaic crochet, make sure there’s plenty of contrast between them. High contrast helps the mosaic pattern really stand out, especially when viewed from across the room on a Christmas mantel.

15 sts and 14 rounds of overlay mosaic = 4” x 4” (10cm x 10cm) using 5.5mm hook

- Each Round uses just one colour.
- A ch1 at the beginning or end of a Round does not count as a stitch.
- The Toe and Heel are worked in continuous Rounds.

- Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each round. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous round.

Using Yarn B (or A if you prefer) and the larger hook you met the gauge with, make a Magic Ring to begin. Work all sts in blo.

Continue to work all sc in blo.
Round 22: B: Fsc20 (to create heel), skip next 20 sts, sc in next 28 sts, ss in blo of 1st st and change to A.
The next round works firstly into the 20 Fsc of Round 22. Work all sc into the blo of the Fsc. If required to work a Mdc into a Fsc, it is placed into the chain at the base of the stitch.

CUFF
Continuing from last Round of Leg, the Cuff is worked in Join As You Go turned rows. Rotate the work 90 degrees to work in Rows around the last Round of the Leg.
Change to the smaller hook and Yarn B (or A if you prefer).
Ch21 (or desired length of cuff remembering that this will be folded over in half).
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and each along [20], ss in next st of last Round of Leg, turn.
Row 2: sc in blo of each st, turn. [20]
Row 3: ch1, sc in blo of each st, ss in next 2 sts of last Round of Leg, turn.
Repeat Rows 2 and 3 around.
Join first and last Row together with a slip stitch seam to complete.
Weave in ends and fold over Cuff into place.
HEEL
With RS facing, join yarn to any corner stitch of heel opening with larger hook. Work all sts in blo.Work in continuous Rounds for the heel from Round 2 onwards.
Round 1: *sc2tog, sc in next 16 sts, sc2tog; rep from * once more. [36]
Round 2: *sc2tog, sc in next 14 sts, sc2tog; rep from * once more. [32]
Round 3: *sc2tog, sc in next 12 sts, sc2tog; rep from * once more. [28]
Round 4: *sc2tog, sc in next 10 sts, sc2tog; rep from * once more. [24]
Round 5: *sc2tog, sc in next 8 sts, sc2tog; rep from * once more. [20]
Round 6: *sc2tog, sc in next 6 sts, sc2tog; rep from * once more. [16]
Break yarn and seam last Round together by sewing through all 16 stitches and pulling together to join heel.
Weave in all ends and block lightly to measurements.
HANGING TIE
You can add any kind of hanging tie to the inside of your cuff that you like. I used simple ribbon for mine.
