Simple Crochet Tree Skirt Pattern Materials

Along with the above you will need the following yarn for your tree skirt:

Main Colour (MC): Starlette, 100% Acrylic, 180yds/165m/100g

Contrast Colour (CC): Bag-O-Day Tonal Hues Yarn, 100% Acrylic, 280yds/256m/150g

You will require approximately: 730 metres, 800 yards of yarn MC to crochet the skirt. 5 balls of the recommended yarn MC.

You will also require approximately 825 metres, 900 yards of yarn CC to crochet the tree skirt. 5 balls of the recommended yarn CC.

It’s a category 4, worsted weight yarn which is what gives your bag its durability. Find out more about yarn weights and categories.

For my Christmas tree skirt, I used the colours Cottonwood (MC) and The Garden Lodge (CC).

I used 2 colours for my tree skirt but you can use as many or as few as you like! I used my contrast colour for my border but if you want to change that then you will need to adjust the ratios of yarn.

Glossary and Abbreviations

Stitches

The pattern is written in standard US terms and uses the following crochet stitches:

sc – single crochet (how to single crochet stitch)

Mdc – mosaic double crochet (mosaic double crochet tutorial)

Special Stitches

SINGLE CROCHET (sc) in back loop only (blo)

Insert hook from front to back through back loop of stitch to be worked. Yarn over and pull through stitch. Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook.

MOSAIC DOUBLE CROCHET (Mdc)

Yarn over and insert hook into front loop of stitch two rows below. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. Yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through remaining two loops on the hook.

The stitch behind the Mdc on the current row is left unworked.

FOUNDATION SINGLE CROCHET (Fsc)

Step 1: Ch2, insert hook into second ch from hook, yarn over and pull up a loop. [2 loops on hook]

Step 2: Yarn over and pull up another loop i.e. ch1. This creates the first “chain” in your foundation row. [still 2 loops on hook]

Step 3: Yarn over and pull through both loops to complete the first Fsc.

Step 4: Next stitch and subsequent stitches: Insert hook into “chain” created in Step 2 (step 5 on subsequent stitches), yarn over and pull up a loop. [2 loops on hook]

Step 5: Yarn over and pull up another loop i.e. ch1. This creates the next “chain” in your foundation row. [still 2 loops on hook]

Step 6: Yarn over and pull through both loops to complete the next Fsc.

Repeat Steps 4, 5 and 6 as required.

How is this Crochet Christmas Tree Skirt Made?

  • The tree skirt is made from the centre out in joined rounds.
  • The yarn is carried at the back of the work so no need to break it.
  • The skirt is worked using the overlay mosaic crochet technique that either uses a single crochet in the back loop only, or a Mosaic double crochet stitch.
  • Once the main body is complete we add a Join As You Go ribbing to the final round to finish.
  • Then you can either pop it on your tree or yourself!

How to Customise my Crochet Tree Skirt

  • If you would like to adjust the diameter of your tree skirt you can do so by working to any point of the chart that you’d like to. Then you can also adjust by adding any depth of ribbing you would like.
  • Good places to finish for the tree patterns are: Rounds 20 (work as all MC instead), 28, 30, and 42.

Pattern Gauge: 14 sts and 14 rounds = 4″ by 4″ using 5.5mm hook and single crochet in the back loops only.

Making a crochet gauge swatch is important when crocheting projects to ensure that it ends up the desired size.

This is also a great way to get used to the stitches used in the project and practise getting your stitches nice and neat.

  • The pattern is worked firstly in joined rounds for the Main Body then in Join As You Go rows for the ribbing.
  • All stitches in the Mosaic Sections are worked as sc in blo or Mdc.
  • Each Round uses just one colour.
  • A ch1 at the beginning or end of a row does not count as a stitch.
  • You can adjust the size of the skirt by finishing at any point and then adding your ribbing to suit.
  • Read through the entire pattern before beginning.
  • Make sure that you are familiar with all of the stitches in the abbreviations list before you begin.
  • Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each row. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous row.

RIBBING

Before beginning your Ribbing it is a good idea to block the Main Body as it will not currently lay flat. Please don’t worry – it will block to be the size and shape we need 🙂

If you are making the full size version then block to approx 31″ diameter (or so that it lays flat for you).

We now work the Ribbing using a Join As You Go Method. Continue in CC:

Row 1: ch12 (or however many you desire for the length of the Ribbing), sc in 2nd ch from the hook and in each along, ss into next st of the Final Round of the Main Body, turn. [11]

Row 2: sc in blo of each st, turn.

Row 3: ch1, sc in blo of each st, ss in next st of the Final Round, turn.

Row 4: Rep Row 2.

Row 5: ch1, sc in blo of each st, ss in next 2 sts of the Final Round, turn.

Rep Rows 2-5 along the Final Round of the Main Body.

Once complete, join the First Row to the Last Row of the Ribbing with a slip stitch seam.

Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Block to measurements to complete.
