Before you jump into crocheting your thick crochet blanket, take a moment to read through the pattern notes—it’s a game-changer!

These handy insights will not only simplify your pattern-reading journey but also ensure a smoother crochet experience. You’ll find helpful tips on deciphering the sizing, customisation and more.

Trust me, a quick peek at these notes will set you up for crochet success!

  • A ch1 at the beg does not count as a st.
  • The pattern is worked in turned rows throughout.
  • Read through the entire pattern before beginning.
  • Before you start, go through the pattern and highlight/mark the stitch and row counts that correspond to the size you are making (this will make your life much easier!).
  • Make sure that you are familiar with all of the stitches in the abbreviations list before you begin.
  • Instructions are given for the smallest size, with larger sizes in brackets ( ). E.g. Baby (Lapghan, Small Throw, Standard Throw, Large Throw, Single Bed, Double Bed).
  • If an instruction does not apply to a particular size then an x is used instead of a number. E.g.  x (x, 2, 3, 4, 4, 5) means that the Baby and Lapghan do not apply to this instruction.
  • Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each Row. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous Row.

USING ANOTHER YARN WEIGHT

How to calculate stitches and rows

I know that lots of people love using yarn that they have from their stash to make blankets that comes in all sorts of different weights!

I made my blanket in a Category 6 weight yarn but thought I’d give you a quick tutorial on how to adjust the pattern for any weight you like.

Firstly, you’ll need to do a gauge swatch (as per page 7) in your chosen yarn. I’d use the recommended hook size for the yarn and see how the drape feels for you.

Once complete, measure your swatch to see how many stitches and rows you have in 4 inches.

Then we can apply a simple formula to find out how many stitches and rows to work.

So for example, you get 13 sts and 10 rows in 4 inches by 4 inches.

We can divide each of these numbers by 4 to find out how many stitches and rows are in 1 inch:

13 divided by 4 = 3.25

10 divided by 4 = 2.5

Now we can use these numbers to work any size of Main Blanket Body that we like. E.g. if you would like your blanket to be 33 inches wide we calculate:

size we want (inches) x number of stitches in 1 inch

33 x 3.25 = 107.25

We need the amount of stitches to be a multiple of 3, so the nearest is 108. We now know we need to work 108 stitches for this size.

You can apply the same principle to the rows (at 2.5 rows per inch in this example) making sure to have an even number of rows.

Finally, you’ll need to calculate how many rows of the Bottom Rib to make.

To do this, you’re going to take your 108 stitches and divide it by 1.5.

108 divided by 1.5 = 72

If you don’t get a whole number for this, don’t worry. You’ll just need to make sure in Row 1 of the main blanket that you end up with the correct number of stitches from your calculation, just like I did for some of the sizes here.
