About the Scarf with Sleeves Crochet Pattern
I designed the Eleanor Sweater Scarf a number of years ago for Simply Crochet Magazine and had forgotten all about launching the pattern on the blog until a few weeks ago when I was wearing it.
It was a bit of a chilly day but had good potential for the sun to come out and so I knew this would be perfect. The crochet sweater scarf is so versatile that you can literally change your outfit in seconds!
I started by wearing it as a regular scarf with a coat on and when the sun came out I took my coat off and wore it as the wrap cardigan you see in the images here.
It’s a great beginner crochet garment project or for anyone who wants to avoid shaping or joining. The simplicity of the construction allows the half double crochet stitch texture to shine through.

Other Patterns You Might Enjoy
Here are a few more of my versatile and easy crochet wearable patterns that I thought you might enjoy – they are all made from really simple squares or rectangles with no shaping at all!
Yarn
To make the original crochet sweater scarf I used Louisa Harding Cassia which is beautiful but unfortunately hard to find at the moment.
My best recommendation for this pattern would be Swish DK yarn by WeCrochet which is 100% fine super wash Merino wool, 123yds/50g in Frosting.
You will need 8, 9 or 11 balls depending on the size you’d like to make.
Tension and Sizing
The crochet wrap cardigan (or crochet sweater scarf – I can’t decide what to call it!) comes in sizes XS/S, M/L, XL/2XL in the following measurements:
Size | To fit bust (cm) | Length between sleeves (cm) | Sleeve length (cm) | Balls of yarn needed |
XS/S | 81-86 | 140 | 27 | 8 |
M/L | 91-97 | 160 | 27 | 9 |
XL/2XL | 102-107 | 180 | 27 | 11 |
17sts and 14 rows of main stitch pattern = 10cm by 10cm.
Materials
Along with your yarn, you will need the following:
- 4.5mm/G+ crochet hook – my favourites are Furls Streamline Swirl crochet hooks or Clover Amour crochet hooks.
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
- Stitch markers if desired
Glossary and Abbreviations
ch(s) – chain(s)
ss – slip stitch
RS – right side
WS – wrong side
rep – repeat
BL – back loop only
FL – front loop only
Crochet Stitches
The Eleanor Sweater Scarf uses the following crochet stitches:
sc – single crochet (UK dc – double crochet)
hdc – half double crochet (UK htr – half treble crochet)
Pattern Notes
A ch1 at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch.
The wrap is worked from the top to bottom in one long row, so you will be working US sc/UK dc in the back loop only at each end of the row for the sleeve rib, and then the main stitch pattern in the centre of the row.
The long edges of the rib portion are then seamed to make sleeves on each end.
The texture of the main stitch pattern is achieved by working US hdc/UK htr stitches in to either the front loop only (FL) or back loop only (BL).
Where a standard hdc/htr abbreviation is used, work a stitch as normal, using both the top loops.

Brilliant! I’m so glad you like it!
Just so lovely, thank you so much for sharing. : ))
Thank you and my pleasure!
Great pattern with versatile wearing options. Looking forward to making the Eleanor Sweater Scarf.
Thanks so much Claudia – looking forward to seeing your version!
I love it but I just wonder if it’ll look funny wearing it as a scarf, because the arms hanging down or slung around the neck might look strange. Could we see more pictures of it worn as a scarf?
Hi Wyn, I don’t have any pictures of it as a scarf I’m afraid but I can definitely take some! I just normally tuck the sleeves in so that you can’t notice them.
Hope that helps,
Hannah
This pattern would work well with foundation sc and hdc. The difference between the two is really no more than the yo. Start with the fsc instead of the starting chain, and do the number of stitches in the cuff length. Start doing a yo when you get to the center stretch, and stop doing the yo when you get back to the cuff. Voila, same stretch on both sides when you’re done. 🙂
You’re absolutely right! It would work really well here.
Is there by chance a video I can follow along on? Such a lovely scarf.
This looked so perfect that I purchased the pattern on Ravelry just now! I’m excited to get started but had a question. If I want to make the sleeve part longer, say, about 2 inches (I have very long arms), do I just increase the starting chain and then work more sleeve stitches?
Thank you so much for your advice!
For increase of about 2” per arm add about 24 stitches. Your arms would then be 62 stitches instead of the 50 in the pattern. I always play around with yarn weight, hook size for wearable items. Best of luck!
Is this pattern no longer available as a a free pattern? I am unable to see the actual directions.
thank you.
My daughter found it and can’t wait for one in purple! Looking for yarn now!
Thanks for sharing and looking forward to seeing more from HanJan!!
How do I get the free pattern if I’m already a member? Would love to make this. It’s beautiful.
If you have yarn that does not quite fit the gauge, is it possible to adjust by hook size for example to get the same gauge?
I got two different yarns I’d like to use, but neither is the same as the merino one used here.
One is 450 metres (150g) and the other is 550 m 100 grams. Both dk.
How forgiving is the pattern?
I can see you use Merino Wool but are there any other alternatives to this? Would Aran yarn work?
Hi I’m newish to crocheting. How do you know how to adjust for size S/m/l/xl? I see the size chart in cm. But don’t understand exactly how many chains make the sizes for the length between the sleeves.
