Sometimes we all need a mindful, repetitive crochet project! These are the projects where you can let your mind wander or watch TV whilst your hands get on with the easy one row crochet stitch repeat.

These kinds of crochet patterns are amazing for stress relief and your mental health in general.

In this post you’ll find everything you need to know how to crochet an easy blanket blanket step by step, including materials, stitches, a detailed video tutorial and free written pattern for blog subscribers.

Plus, there’s a full stitch tutorial of the double crochet cross stitch which we use in this pattern!

Yarn

Amigo DK, 100% Acrylic, 175m / 191yds / 50g

It’s a category 3, DK weight yarn which is what gives this blanket its glorious drape. Check out our handy yarn weight chart and guide to find out more about yarn weights and categories.

I used a rich rusty palette for my blanket: Sand, Walnut, Curry and Cognac.

See my other crochet patterns using lightweight and double knit weight yarn – you might find your next project there too!

You can use any yarn that you like bearing in mind that you need to make sure you meet the gauge. Some other great options are:

How much yarn do I need to crochet a striped crochet afghan?

The following yarn amounts are estimated as a total as the pattern is written assuming a single colour is used. Any changes and customisations will adjust the amount of yarn required so make sure to order plenty.

If you are using multiple colours you will need to plan the ratio of each within the total amount.

For the baby/child sizes, you will require approximately 105 (185, 365, 1015, 1520, 2125, 2230) metres, 115 (200, 400, 1110, 1660, 2325, 2435) yards of yarn to crochet the blanket.

This is 1 (2, 3, 6, 9, 13, 13) balls of the recommended yarn.

For the adult sizes, you will require approximately 1645 (2810, 4270, 5370, 7590, 8745, 10480, 12040) metres, 1800 (3070, 4670, 5870, 8300, 9560, 11460, 13165) yards of yarn to crochet the blanket.

This is 10 (17, 25, 31, 44, 50, 60, 69) balls of the recommended yarn.

How do you Make a Quick Crochet Blanket Pattern?

  • The Centre Panel of the blanket is made in turned rows.
  • You can change colour after every row as you would like to.
  • Once the Centre Panel is complete we weave in ends before adding the Border.
  • The simple single crochet Border is added in rounds working around the edge of the blanket.
  • You can add as many or as few Border rounds as you like.

Pattern Gauge

Gauge: 20sts and 8 rows = 4″ by 4″

Making a crochet gauge swatch is important when crocheting projects like garments to ensure that it ends up the desired size.

Before you jump into crocheting your simple crochet blanket, take a moment to read through the pattern notes—it’s a game-changer!

These handy insights will not only simplify your pattern-reading journey but also ensure a smoother crochet experience. You’ll find helpful tips on deciphering the sizing, customisation and more.

Trust me, a quick peek at these notes will set you up for crochet success!

  • The pattern is worked in turned rows for the Centre Panel and rounds that are not turned for the Border.
  • A ch3 at the beginning of a row does count as a stitch.
  • A ch1 at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch.
  • Make sure to use stitch markers at the beginning of each row or round so as not to lose your place.
  • Read through the entire pattern before beginning.
  • Before you start, go through the pattern and highlight/mark the stitch and row counts that correspond to the size you are making (this will make your life much easier!).
  • Make sure that you are familiar with all of the stitches in the abbreviations list before you begin.
  • Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each row. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous row.
  • The count number referring to each size is laid out as follows: Baby/Child Sizes: Lovey (Baby, Cradle, Stroller, Receiving, Crib, Swaddle); Adult Sizes: Lapghan (Throw, Afghan, Twin, Full, Queen, King, Super King)
