How much yarn do I need to crochet a wrap crochet sweater?

The following yarn amounts are estimated as a total as the pattern is written assuming a single colour is used. Any changes and customisations will adjust the amount of yarn required so make sure to order plenty.

You will require approximately 1040 (1455, 2035) metres, 1140 (1590, 2230) yards of yarn to crochet the sweater scarf.

This is 3 (4, 5) balls of the recommended yarn for all sizes.

Six pastel puff stitch crochet hats with faux fur pom-poms are arranged on a beige surface, surrounded by pine cones, yarn, and autumn leaves.

Stitches

The pattern is written in standard US terms and uses the following crochet stitches:

sc – single crochet (UK dc – double crochet)

hdc – half double crochet (UK htr – half treble crochet)

Special Stitches

blo – back loop only

To work the back loop only, turn your work so that the top is facing you to see the front and back loops. Work into the back loop by inserting the hook into the loop furthest from you.

Yo slst – Yarn over slip stitch

Yoh, insert your hook, yoh and pull through stitch and all loops on the hook.

3hdc-puff: 3 half double crochet puff stitch

Step 1: Yarn over hook, insert into the indicated stitch, yoh and pull up a loop. Make sure your loop is the same height as the stitch.

Step 2: Repeat Step 1 two more times in the same stitch. (7 loops on hook)

Step 3: Yoh and pull through all the loops on the hook.

Foundation single crochet (Fsc)

Step 1: Ch2, insert hook into second ch from hook, yarn over and pull up a loop. [2 loops on hook]

Step 2: Yarn over and pull up another loop i.e. ch1. This creates the first “chain” in your foundation row. [still 2 loops on hook]

Step 3: Yarn over and pull through both loops to complete the first Fsc.

Step 4: Next stitch and subsequent stitches: Insert hook into “chain” created in Step 2, yarn over and pull up a loop. [2 loops on hook]

Step 5: Yarn over and pull up another loop i.e. ch1. This creates the next “chain” in your foundation row. [still 2 loops on hook]

Step 6: Yarn over and pull through both loops to complete the next Fsc.

Repeat Steps 4, 5 and 6 as required.

How do you Make this Bridal Shrug Crochet Pattern?

  • The Main Body and Sleeves are worked in long horizontal rows.
  • There is a four row repeat pattern that is worked throughout the pattern until it reaches the desired depth for the Body.
  • Once complete, the sleeves are seamed to join the first row to the last row and create the desired shape.

Pattern Gauge

Gauge: 16sts and 12 rows = 4″ by 4″

Making a crochet gauge swatch is important when crocheting projects like hats and garments to ensure that it ends up the desired size.

Before you jump into crocheting your crochet sweater scarf pattern free, take a moment to read through the pattern notes—it’s a game-changer!

These handy insights will not only simplify your pattern-reading journey but also ensure a smoother crochet experience. You’ll find helpful tips on deciphering the sizing, customisation and more.

Trust me, a quick peek at these notes will set you up for crochet success!

  • A ch1 at the beg does not count as a st. Any other chains within a row do count as stitches.
  • The pattern is worked in turned rows.
  • Read through the entire pattern before beginning.
  • Before you start, go through the pattern and highlight/mark the stitch and row counts that correspond to the size you are making (this will make your life much easier!).
  • Make sure that you are familiar with all of the stitches in the abbreviations list before you begin.
  • Instructions are given for the smallest size, with larger sizes in brackets ( ). E.g. XS-M (L-2XL, 3XL-5XL)
  • If an instruction does not apply to a particular size then a – is used instead of a number. E.g. 2 (-, 4) means that the L-2XL does not apply to this instruction.
  • Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each row. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous Row.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • The sweater scarf is worked from the top to bottom in one long row, so you will be working shorter stitches at each end of the row for the sleeve rib, and then the Main Stitch Pattern in the centre of the row.
  • The long edges of the rib portion are then seamed to make sleeves on each end.

Made in just one piece with simple seams for the sleeves, you’ll have it made and on in no time.

SEAMING AND FINISHING

BLOCKING

Before seaming the Sleeves, make sure to block your project to measurements while it is still flat.

Once blocked, we can now seam the Sleeves.

SEAMING SLEEVES

With WS facing you, line up the first and last rows of each Sleeve so that the stitches match up.

Using the tail from the Last Row, seam the stitches of the Sleeve using your preferred method. You can continue to seam into the Main Body to create a longer sleeve if desired.

Using a new piece of yarn, seam the other Sleeve to match the first.

You can crochet the seams of the Sleeve together if you prefer.

FINISHING

Weave in all ends to finish.
