Video Tutorial for the Crochet Shamrock Coaster
Come along as I make this mosaic crochet coaster pattern and see just how easy it is in our step-by-step video tutorial.
Crochet Shamrock Coaster Pattern Materials
- A 3.5mm(E) crochet hook or hook needed to reach coaster size
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch markers
Along with the above you will need the following yarn for your coasters:
Cottage Cotton Yarn, 60% Cotton, 40% Acrylic 207yds/189m/100g in 2 colours. For mine I used Chiffon, Silver Sage and Hilltop.
You will require approximately: 73 metres, 80 yards of each of yarn A and yarn B to crochet the coasters. 1 ball of the recommended yarn A and yarn B.
It’s a category 4, worsted weight yarn which is what gives these baskets their sturdy structure. Find out more about yarn weights and categories.

Yarn Substitutes
You can use any yarn that you like bearing in mind that you need to make sure you meet the gauge. Some options are:

- Dishie, 100% Cotton, 190yds/175m/100g
- Craft Cotton Yarn, 100% Cotton, 115yds/105m/71g
Sizing

Special Stitches
SINGLE CROCHET (sc) always worked in back loop only (blo).
Insert hook from front to back through stitch to be worked. Yarn over and pull through stitch. Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook.
MOSAIC DOUBLE CROCHET (Mdc)
Yarn over and insert hook into front loop of stitch two rounds below. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. Yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook.* Yarn over and pull through remaining two loops on the hook.
The stitch behind the Mdc on the current round is left unworked.
MOSAIC DOUBLE CROCHET 2 TOGETHER (Mdc2tog) – current and next st
Begin working a Mdc in the current st but stop at *. Now begin another Mdc in the next st and complete by yarning over and pulling through all the loops on the hook.
MOSAIC DOUBLE CROCHET 2 TOGETHER (Mdc2tog) – previous and current st
Begin working a Mdc in the previous st but stop at *. Now begin another Mdc in the current st and complete by yarning over and pulling through all the loops on the hook.
2 MOSAIC DOUBLE CROCHET (2Mdc)
Work two mosaic double crochet stitches in the front loop of the stitch 2 rounds below. In the heart motif this helps to shape the sides. It does not increase the stitch count as you will be skipping a stitch either before or after.

FOUNDATION SINGLE CROCHET (Fsc)
- Step 1: Ch2, insert hook into second ch from hook, yarn over and pull up a loop. [2 loops on hook]
- Step 2: Yarn over and pull up another loop i.e. ch1. This creates the first “chain” in your foundation row. [still 2 loops on hook]
- Step 3: Yarn over and pull through both loops to complete the first Fsc.
- Step 4: Next stitch and subsequent stitches: Insert hook into “chain” created in Step 2, yarn over and pull up a loop. [2 loops on hook]
- Step 5: Yarn over and pull up another loop i.e. ch1. This creates the next “chain” in your foundation row. [still 2 loops on hook]
- Step 6: Yarn over and pull through both loops to complete the next Fsc.
- Repeat Steps 4, 5 and 6 as required.
How to Crochet a Shamrock Coaster?
- The coasters are made from the bottom up starting with a row of foundation single crochet stitches.
- The body of the coaster is then worked in overlay mosaic crochet rows.
- At the end of each row you will need to break the yarn.
- To start the next row, with the right side facing, join the yarn to the first stitch of the row just worked.
- When complete you can either weave in your ends or create small tassels.
Pattern Gauge: not essential for this project
Making a crochet gauge swatch is important when crocheting projects to ensure that it ends up the desired size.
For small projects like this quick coaster though, it’s not essential so just go for it and adjust you hook size if you need to.
Before you jump into crocheting your crochet cup coasters, take a moment to read through the pattern notes—it’s a game-changer!
These handy insights will not only simplify your pattern-reading journey but also ensure a smoother crochet experience. You’ll find helpful tips on deciphering the sizing, customisation and more.
- The pattern is worked in rows using the overlay mosaic crochet technique for the main body.
- All stitches in the Mosaic Sections are worked as sc in blo or Mdc.
- Each Row uses just one colour.
- A ch1 at the beginning or end of a Row does not count as a stitch.
- Read through the entire pattern before beginning.
- Make sure that you are familiar with all of the stitches in the abbreviations list before you begin.
- Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each row. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous row.
- You can either work the entire project from the written pattern or from the chart depending on what you prefer.

US Terminology
Throughout the Main Coaster Panel break the yarn at the end of each row. With the RS facing join the next colour of yarn to the first st of the previous row.
If you would like to create tassels then make sure to break the yarn with at least 3 inches tail on each row.
Work all sc in the back loop only throughout the pattern. This is not written within the pattern to save space.
Refer to Mosaic Chart (available in the premium PDF pattern) or use the written instructions as follows.

To complete your coaster you can either weave in your ends or create small tassels.
I did this by knotting together 3 strands (and one set of 4 strands) at the side of the coaster. Once pulled secure, cut the ends to a matching length.
Block to complete. I found that steam blocking worked best. Enjoy!
