Pattern Overview: Crochet Heart Mittens

Pattern for: crochet heart mittens in 3 sizes for toddler, child and adult

Yarn used: 100% acrylic DK weight

Difficulty level: Intermediate – but nice and easy once you get the hang of it.

Stitches used: These crochet gloves use overlay mosaic crochet to create the beautiful heart motifs.

Hannah’s Notes: Create a stunning showstopper with this fun mosaic crochet mitten pattern in sizes for toddlers, children and adults. Using just one colour per round it’s amazingly simple to crochet and toasty warm to wear too!

  • One-colour-per-round mosaic crochet: easy, calming, and satisfying.
  • Seamless construction with no sewing or joining.
  • Sweet heart motif with endless colour possibilities.
  • Quick to make: perfect for Valentine gifts or last-minute baby makes.

Heart Mitten Pattern Materials

Along with the above you will need the following yarn for your mittens:

Yarn A: Mellowspun DK, 100% Acrylic, 260m/284yds/100g

Yarn B: Prism DK, 100% Acrylic, 265m/290yds/100g

For Toddler (Child, Adult) you will require approximately: 146 (174, 197) metres, 160 (190, 215) yards of yarn A to crochet the mittens. 1 ball of the recommended yarn A for all sizes.

You will also require approximately 40 (53, 67) metres, 44 (58, 73) yards of yarn B to crochet the mittens. 1 ball of the recommended yarn B for all sizes.

It’s a category 3, DK weight yarn which is what gives these mittens their glorious detail. Find out more about yarn weights and categories.

I used a huge variety in my makes to really show off the stunning colours that Prism has to offer. Here are my favourite combinations: Mellowspun Cream and Prism Succulent, Mellowspun White and Prism Tropics, Mellowspun Buff and Prism Iris.

Glossary and Abbreviations

If you like this pattern, you might also like this mosaic crochet beanie pattern, which uses the same overlay mosaic crochet technique.

Stitches

The pattern is written in standard US terms and uses the following crochet stitches:

sc – single crochet (how to single crochet stitch)

Mdc – Mosaic double crochet (mosaic double crochet tutorial)

Special Stitches

SINGLE CROCHET (sc)  always worked in back loop only (blo).

Insert hook from front to back through stitch to be worked. Yarn over and pull through stitch. Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook.

MOSAIC DOUBLE CROCHET (Mdc)

Yarn over and insert hook into front loop of stitch two rounds below. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. Yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook.* Yarn over and pull through remaining two loops on the hook.

The stitch behind the Mdc on the current round is left unworked.

SINGLE CROCHET 2 TOGETHER (sc2tog)

Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through stitch. Insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull through stitch. Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook.

MOSAIC DOUBLE CROCHET 2 TOGETHER (Mdc2tog) – current and next st

Begin working a Mdc in the current st but stop at *. Now begin another Mdc in the next st and complete by yarning over and pulling through all the loops on the hook.

MOSAIC DOUBLE CROCHET 2 TOGETHER (Mdc2tog) – previous and current st

Begin working a Mdc in the previous st but stop at *. Now begin another Mdc in the current st and complete by yarning over and pulling through all the loops on the hook.

2 MOSAIC DOUBLE CROCHET (2Mdc)

Work two mosaic double crochet stitches in the front loop of the stitch 2 rounds below. In the heart motif this helps to shape the sides. It does not increase the stitch count as you will be skipping a stitch either before or after.

Mosaic crochet is such great fun! Check out my other mosaic crochet patterns and see just how much you can do with this fun technique!

How do you Make these Crochet Heart Gloves?

  • The mittens are made from the bottom up.
  • We begin with the Mitten Cuff that uses sc stitches and is worked in turned rows.
  • The Mitten Cuff is joined to form a ring.
  • The Main Mitten Body is then worked in rounds into the sides of the Mitten Cuff rows.
  • We break the yarn at the end of the round for a number of rounds then rejoin again to create the Thumb Hole.
  • With the Main Mitten Body complete, we add the Thumb in joined rounds to the Thumb Hole.

Pattern Gauge: 20 sts and 18 rounds = 4″ by 4″ using 4.5mm hook

Making a crochet gauge swatch is important when crocheting projects to ensure that it ends up the desired size.

This is also a great way to get used to the stitches used in the project and practise getting your stitches nice and neat.

Before you jump into crocheting your crochet heart gloves pattern, take a moment to read through the pattern notes—it’s a game-changer!

These handy insights will not only simplify your pattern-reading journey but also ensure a smoother crochet experience. You’ll find helpful tips on deciphering the sizing, customisation and more.

Trust me, a quick peek at these notes will set you up for crochet success!

  • The pattern is worked firstly in rows for the Mitten Cuff and then in rounds for the Main Mitten Body and Thumb.
  • Make sure to use stitch markers at the beginning of each round so as not to lose your place.
  • All stitches are worked as sc in blo or Mdc.
  • Each Round uses just one colour.
  • A ch1 at the beginning of a row or round does not count as a stitch.
  • Read through the entire pattern before beginning.
  • Before you start, go through the pattern and highlight/mark the stitch and row counts that correspond to the size you are making (this will make your life much easier!).
  • Make sure that you are familiar with all of the stitches in the abbreviations list before you begin.
  • Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each row or round. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous row.
  • The count number referring to each size is laid out as follows: Toddler (Child, Adult)
