To make this crochet sling bag free pattern, I used Dishie by WeCrochet, which is 100% cotton (190yds/174m/100g) worsted weight.

Dishie is a hardworking worsted weight 100% cotton yarn with a tight spin and high absorbency. This makes Dishie not only easy to crochet with but extremely durable as well – the go-to choice for hardwearing projects that will last for years, even with daily use.

It’s a category 4, worsted weight yarn which is what makes these bag so sturdy. Check our handy yarn weight chart and guide to find out more about yarn weights and categories.

I used Mushroom for my cross body bag.

Pattern Gauge

Gauge: 13 sts and 6 rows = 4”by 4”

Making a crochet gauge swatch is important when crocheting projects to ensure that it ends up the desired size. However gauge isn’t essential as long as you are happy with the size of your bag.

BASE

Foundation chain: ch27

Round 1: RS: 5dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next 22 sts, 6dc in next st, rotate to work on unworked side of foundation chain now, dc in next 22 sts, ss in 1st st to join [56].

BAG BODY

Round 2: stacked dc (or ch3) in blo of first st, dc in blo of each st around, ss in 1st st to join.

Round 3: Rep Round 2.

Round 4: stacked dc (or ch3) in first st, dc in next 2 sts, working around the 3 sts just made, work a dc in the st before them (this is the last st of the previous round), *skip next st, dc in next 3 sts, working around the 3 sts just made, work a dc in the skipped st before them; rep from * around, ss in 1st st to join.

Round 5: Rep Round 2.

Rounds 4 and 5 create the Main Set Pattern.

Rounds 6-13: Rep the Main Set Pattern.

If you would like your bag taller then continue to repeat as desired before working the final round as follows:

Round 14: sc in each st around, ss in 1st st to join.

STRAP

– continue with yarn

Rows 1-94: sc in next 8 sts, turn [8]

Break yarn. With RS facing, rotate bag to have the other side facing you, join yarn to 8 sts from side crease. This will be diagonally opposite the first strap.

Repeat Rows 1-94 of the Strap on this side now. When complete, join together the last rows of the Straps with either a ss seam or sew them making sure they twist to form a cross body strap that sits flat around your body. Weave in ends.

CLASPS AND FINISHING

To add clasps as I have, sew 1 in place evenly to the front of your bag as desired.

You can of course use any fastening that you like including a zip, buckle or clip.
