How much yarn do I need to crochet a unique crochet hat?

The following yarn amounts are estimated. Any changes and customisations will adjust the amount of yarn required so make sure to order plenty.

Newborn (Baby, Toddler, Child, S/M Adult, L Adult)

You will require approximately 65 (73, 82, 110, 155, 182) metres, 70 (80, 90, 120, 170, 199) yards of yarn A to crochet the beanie.

This is 1 ball of the recommended yarn A for all sizes.

You will also require approximately 28 (32, 35, 47, 66, 78) metres, 30 (34, 39, 51, 73, 85) yards of yarn B to crochet the beanie.

This is 1 ball of the recommended yarn B for all sizes.

beg – beginning

blo – back loop only

ch(s) – chain(s)

flo – front loop only

rep – repeat

RS – right side

sp – space

ss/sl st – slip stitch

st(s) – stitch(es)

tog – together

WS – wrong side

Yoh – yarn over hook

Stitches

The pattern is written in standard US terms and uses the following crochet stitches:

sc – single crochet (UK dc – double crochet)

Mdc – Mosaic double crochet (UK Mtr – mosaic treble crochet)

Special Stitches

SINGLE CROCHET (sc)  always worked in back loop only (blo).

Insert hook from front to back through stitch to be worked. Yarn over and pull through stitch. Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook.

MOSAIC DOUBLE CROCHET (Mdc)

Yarn over and insert hook into front loop of stitch two rounds below. Yarn over and pull through the stitch. Yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through remaining two loops on the hook.

The stitch behind the Mdc on the current round is left unworked.

SINGLE CROCHET 2 TOGETHER (sc2tog)

Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull through stitch. Insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull through stitch. Yarn over and pull through all three loops on the hook.

How do you Make this Unique Crochet Hat?

• The hat is made from the bottom up.
• We begin with the Hat Band that uses sc stitches and is worked in turned rows.
• The Hat Band is joined to form a ring.
• The Main Hat Body is then worked in rounds into the sides of the Hat Band rows.
• With the Main Hat Body complete, we now work a number of decrease rounds at the top of the hat to shape and finish the Crown.

Making a crochet gauge swatch is important when crocheting projects like hats and garments to ensure that it ends up the desired size.

• The pattern is worked firstly in rows for the Hat Band and then in rounds for the Main Hat Body and Crown.
• Make sure to use stitch markers at the beginning of each round so as not to lose your place.
• All stitches are worked as sc in blo or Mdc.
• Each Round uses just one colour.
• A ch1 at the beginning of a row or round does not count as a stitch.
• Read through the entire pattern before beginning.
• Before you start, go through the pattern and highlight/mark the stitch and row counts that correspond to the size you are making (this will make your life much easier!).
• Make sure that you are familiar with all of the stitches in the abbreviations list before you begin.
• Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each row or round. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous row.
• The count number referring to each size is laid out as follows: Newborn (Baby, Toddler, Child, Small/Medium Adult, Large Adult)

Break yarn leaving a long tail to sew top of hat.

With yarn needle weave the yarn tail through every other st around.

Pull hat tight making sure the opening is fully closed. Weave the yarn in opposite directions to make sure it is secure.

Weave in all ends to finish.

Adding a pom pom

You can complete the look of your hat by securing a ready made pom pom as I have or creating your own using some yarn and a pom pom maker.

Make sure to secure the pom pom well to the top centre of the hat.

Adding a label or tag

Another great addition to your hat is a small tag to add a really professional finish.

I used custom made tags with my logo on but you can find a huge range of ready made ones to use too!

Just add them to the brim by sewing them on.
