Yarn
Amigo DK, 100% Acrylic, 175m / 191yds / 50g
It’s a category 3, DK weight yarn which is what gives this blanket its glorious drape. Check out our handy yarn weight chart and guide to find out more about yarn weights and categories.

How much yarn do I need to crochet a crochet blanket with holes?
The following yarn amounts are estimated as a total as the pattern is written assuming a single colour is used. Any changes and customisations will adjust the amount of yarn required so make sure to order plenty.
If you are using multiple colours you will need to plan the ratio of each within the total amount.
For the baby/child sizes, you will require approximately 105 (185, 365, 1015, 1520, 2125, 2230) metres, 115 (200, 400, 1110, 1660, 2325, 2435) yards of yarn to crochet the blanket.
This is 1 (2, 3, 6, 9, 13, 13) balls of the recommended yarn.
For the adult sizes, you will require approximately 1645 (2810, 4270, 5370, 7590, 8745, 10480, 12040) metres, 1800 (3070, 4670, 5870, 8300, 9560, 11460, 13165) yards of yarn to crochet the blanket.
This is 10 (17, 25, 31, 44, 50, 60, 69) balls of the recommended yarn.
Other Materials
Along with your yarn, you will need the following:
- A 4.5mm(G+) crochet hook or hook needed to meet gauge
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch markers

If you like this pattern, you might also like this easy crochet throw pattern, which is the Oolong blanket, another crochet blanket pattern in the afternoon tea series!
It uses the fun crochet cabbage patch stitch which is just as beautifully textured as the one we are using in the Lapsang blanket!
Stitches
The pattern is written in standard US terms and uses the following crochet stitches:
sc – single crochet (how to single crochet stitch)
dc – double crochet (double crochet stitch tutorial)
Special Stitches
Reverse single crochet
Work a single crochet into the previous stitch, therefore working in the opposite direction to normal and creating a twisted edging.
How do you Make a Traditional Crochet Baby Blanket?
- The Centre Panel of the blanket is made in turned rows.
- You can change colour after every row as you would like to.
- Once the Centre Panel is complete we weave in ends before adding the Border.
- The simple double crochet Border is added in rounds working around the edge of the blanket.
- You can add as many or as few Border rounds as you like before adding the final round of reverse single crochet.
Pattern Gauge
Gauge: 22sts and 7 rows = 4″ by 4″
Making a crochet gauge swatch is important when crocheting projects to ensure that it ends up the desired size.
This is also a great way to get used to the stitches used in the project and practise getting your stitches nice and neat.
Before you jump into crocheting your light crochet blanket pattern, take a moment to read through the pattern notes—it’s a game-changer!
These handy insights will not only simplify your pattern-reading journey but also ensure a smoother crochet experience. You’ll find helpful tips on deciphering the sizing, customisation and more.
Trust me, a quick peek at these notes will set you up for crochet success!
- The pattern is worked in turned rows for the Centre Panel and rounds that are not turned for the Border.
- A ch3 at the beginning of a row does count as a stitch.
- A ch1 at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch.
- Make sure to use stitch markers at the beginning of each row or round so as not to lose your place.
- Read through the entire pattern before beginning.
- Before you start, go through the pattern and highlight/mark the stitch and row counts that correspond to the size you are making (this will make your life much easier!).
- Make sure that you are familiar with all of the stitches in the abbreviations list before you begin.
- Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each row. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous row.
- The count number referring to each size is laid out as follows: Lovey (Baby, Cradle, Stroller, Receiving, Crib, Swaddle); Adult Sizes: Lapghan (Throw, Afghan, Twin, Full, Queen, King, Super King)
