Yarn Quantities
This design uses the yarn DOUBLED throughout. Make sure to hold 2 strands together when making your baskets.
This design uses 2 yarn colours, A and B.
The following yarn amounts are estimated. Any changes and customisations will adjust the amount of yarn required so make sure to order plenty.
Sizes: Small (Medium, Large)
Yarn A: You will need approx. 90 (200, 360) m, 100 (220, 390) yds of yarn A to crochet the basket.
This is 1 (2, 3) balls of the recommended yarn for yarn A.
Yarn B: You will need approx. 45 (100, 175) m, 50 (110, 190) yds of yarn B to crochet the basket.
This is 1 (1, 2) balls of the recommended yarn for yarn B.
For my baskets I used Starlette in Cottonwood (A) and Brava Tweed in Wasabi (B) but here are some other great Brava Tweed shades to try:
Boysenberry, Pumpkin Bread, Goldenrod, Wreath, Elderberry.

Are you new to overlay mosaic crochet?
Learn all about the overlay mosaic crochet technique and find out that it’s really not as tricky as it looks in the mosaic crochet tutorial.
Oftentimes mosaic crochet is read from a chart rather than written instructions and this can be super intimidating at first! If it’s the mosaic crochet charts that have you running for the hills, then check out this blogpost all about how to read a mosaic crochet chart.
Once you’ve got the technique mastered, head on over to this collection of overlay mosaic crochet patterns and choose your next project!
THIRD LOOP
The third loop of a half double crochet is found at the back of the stitch when working in rounds.

How do you Make these Crochet Nesting Baskets?
The baskets are made from the bottom up starting with the base.
The body is then worked in overlay mosaic crochet rounds.
We then continue in rounds to add the handles to finish.
Pattern Gauge
Gauge: not essential, 4 rounds of base = 3.5″
You can find out more about making a crochet gauge swatch here.
Before you jump into crocheting your christmas crochet gift basket, take a moment to read through the pattern notes—it’s a game-changer!
These handy insights will not only simplify your pattern-reading journey but also ensure a smoother crochet experience. You’ll find helpful tips on deciphering the sizing, customisation and more.
Trust me, a quick peek at these notes will set you up for crochet success!
- The pattern is worked in rounds using the overlay mosaic crochet technique for the main body.
- All stitches in the Mosaic Sections are worked as sc in blo or Mdc.
- Each Round uses just one colour.
- A ch1 at the beginning or end of a Round does not count as a stitch.
- Read through the entire pattern before beginning.
- Make sure that you are familiar with all of the stitches in the abbreviations list before you begin.
- Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each round. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous round.
- If following charts for the mosaic sections then you will need to follow the written pattern for the base and handles.
