In this post you’ll find everything you need to know how to crochet a Christmas stocking step by step, including materials, stitches, a detailed video tutorial and free written pattern for blog subscribers.

Yarn

I used a combination of yarns in my stockings – some use a worsted weight yarn with 2 strands of DK yarn used in them too. This is s great pattern to experiment and have fun with colours and yarn!

Plain yarn:Starlette, 100% Acrylic, 180yds/165m/100g (one strand)

Variegated yarn: Prism DK, 100% Acrylic, 265m/290yds/100g (held doubled throughout)

There’s just something magical about making handmade pieces at Christmas time, isn’t there? Whether it’s a cosy corner filled with twinkling lights or a brand-new crochet stocking pattern on your hook, those little touches of handmade home décor make everything feel warmer, lovelier, and so much more you.

I don’t know about you, but I can’t help making a new set of stockings every single year. My children now have the absolute best time choosing which one they’ll hang up — it’s become a tradition all on its own, and honestly one of my favourites.

  • One-colour-per-round mosaic crochet — easy, rhythmic and so satisfying.
  • It’s a one-piece make worked from the toe up, giving you a seamless and super satisfying stocking without any tricky construction.
  • Worsted weight yarn means it works up fast, so you can enjoy last-minute gifting, decorating, or a cosy evening project.
  • 2 different designs and endless colour possibilities.

Are you new to overlay mosaic crochet?

Learn all about the overlay mosaic crochet technique and find out that it’s really not as tricky as it looks in the mosaic crochet tutorial.

Oftentimes mosaic crochet is read from a chart rather than written instructions and this can be super intimidating at first! If it’s the mosaic crochet charts that have you running for the hills, then check out this blogpost all about how to read a mosaic crochet chart.

How do you Make this Christmas crochet stocking pattern?

The stocking is made from the Toe up, with an afterthought Heel and a Join As You Go Cuff to finish.

The Foot and Leg are made using overlay mosaic crochet in the round.

Pattern Gauge

15 sts and 14 rounds of overlay mosaic = 4” x 4” (10cm x 10cm) using 5.5mm hook

Making a crochet gauge swatch is important when crocheting any project to ensure that it ends up the desired size.

Before you jump into crocheting your stocking, take a moment to read through the pattern notes—it’s a game-changer!

These handy insights will not only simplify your pattern-reading journey but also ensure a smoother crochet experience. You’ll find helpful tips on deciphering the sizing, customisation and more.

Trust me, a quick peek at these notes will set you up for crochet success!

The pattern is worked in rounds using the overlay mosaic crochet technique for the Foot and Leg.

All stitches in the Mosaic Sections are worked as sc in blo or Mdc.

Each Round uses just one colour.

A ch1 at the beginning or end of a Round does not count as a stitch.

The Toe and Heel are worked in continuous Rounds.

Read through the entire pattern before beginning.

Make sure that you are familiar with all of the stitches in the abbreviations list before you begin.

Stitch counts are given in [ ] at the end of each round. If no stitch count is given, then the count is the same as the previous round.

If following charts for the mosaic sections then you will need to follow the written pattern for the Toe, Heel and Cuff.
