We’ve finally had some lovely sunshine here in the UK and so this week I’m going all summery and sharing my Vintage Lace Crochet Shawl pattern. It’s perfect for late spring days and summer evenings. I’ve worn it to a wedding too and had so many comments on it!

The pattern is here free for everyone to enjoy. This post contains some affiliate links so any clicks from you help support me to bring more free patterns each week.

The Shawl

I originally designed this shawl for Simply Crochet magazine quite a number of years ago (way back for issue 8!) and am so pleased to share it with you now. It’s effortlessly easy to wear and I love it so much I have a few in different colours!

It consists of 5 lace panels in different sizes that are edged, then joined, followed by a delicate edging around the whole thing and then finally a big old fringe at each short end to finish. It sounds complicated but I promise it’s much easier than it seems, once you’ve mastered the main stitch pattern you’re there.

Yarn

My favourite version of this shawl is made with Rowan Summerlite 4ply 100% cotton but you can use any 4ply cotton that you enjoy working with. You’ll need around 300g for the shawl.

Another great yarn that would work well for this is Comfy Fingering by WeCrochet. It has the most amazing selection of colours to choose from.

Pattern Notes:

The shawl is made from five separate lace panels with the largest in the centre. The two of the second size are joined to this and the two of the third size join to the ends. Each panel has a small edging on the row edges being joined together, and then the entire shawl has a border to finish.

Pattern:

Each panel is a repeat of the same pattern but with a different size foundation chain, all with a multiple of 12+3. For Panel 1 use 75ch, for Panel 2 use 51ch and for Panel 3 use 39ch.

Make one of Panel 1, two of Panel 2 and two of Panel 3. The panels will then be laid out and joined as follows:

Lace Panels:

Row 1: RS – 2tr/dc in 3rd ch from hook, *sk2, dc/sc in next, ch5, sk5, dc/sc in next, sk2, 5tr/dc in next, rep from * ending last rep with 3tr/dc in last ch, [72,48,36]
