💫 Why you’ll love the Luma Cluster Cardigan

🧶 Why this crochet shrug pattern is so easy to make
If you’ve ever felt unsure about crocheting garments (trust me I know that feeling!), this is a wonderful place to start. The Luma Cluster Cardigan is constructed from one large square, meaning there’s no complex shaping—just a simple, repeatable stitch pattern that grows steadily as you work.
Once your square is complete, a small amount of seaming transforms it into a cocoon-style cardigan. It’s a satisfying and confidence-boosting project that shows just how approachable garment-making can be.
And did I mention it only uses one stitch?! The double crochet stitch is perfect to make it easy for beginners.
🧵 A crochet cardigan made from one square
The beauty of this design lies in its simplicity. You’ll begin with a single square worked in a delicate, textured V-stitch cluster pattern, then fold and seam it to create the finished shape.
There’s no need to worry about sleeves, shaping, or complicated construction—just a clever design that comes together with ease and feels almost magical when complete.
Another example of this type of easy cardigan to crochet is my Theory Cocoon Cardigan, I love how simple they are!

FAQs – How to Crochet a Shrug
Yes! This is a great project for confident beginners. If you’re comfortable with basic stitches and working in rows, you’ll be able to follow along easily. The repetitive V-stitch cluster pattern makes it relaxing to crochet while still creating a beautifully textured finish.
Not at all. The cardigan is made from one simple square, so there’s no increasing, decreasing, or sleeve shaping involved. Once your square is complete, you’ll seam it in a few places to create the cocoon shape.
You’ll crochet one large square using the cluster stitch pattern. The square is then folded and seamed to form the sleeves and body, creating a drapey cocoon-style cardigan with minimal effort.
Yes! The pattern includes three sizes, but it’s also easy to customise by making your square larger or smaller. You can also adjust sleeve depth and overall length depending on how you like your cardigan to fit.
This style is incredibly versatile and easy to wear. Pair it with jeans and a simple top for a relaxed everyday look, or layer it over a dress for something softer and more feminine. It also works beautifully as a light cover-up in warmer weather.
Yes—its lightweight, breathable texture makes it perfect for spring and summer layering, while still being cosy enough to wear indoors or layered up in cooler months.
Pattern Gauge
Gauge: 3 sets of cluster stitches and 5 rows = 4″ square.
A ‘set of cluster stitches’ = (2dc-Cl, ch1, 2dc-Cl)
Making a crochet gauge swatch is important when crocheting projects like garments to ensure that it ends up the desired size.

SIDE SEAMS
To seam the cardigan and make armholes:
Lay the square down flat with the foundation chain at the bottom nearest you.
Fold the square in half from left to right and make sure the first and last stitches of the foundation row and the first and last stitches of the last row are lined up.
Work a ss seam or sew to join the first and last 8 sets of clusters on the foundation chain (a set of clusters = 2dc-Cl, ch1, 2dc-Cl), leave the remaining sets of clusters unworked for the armhole.
You can now try on the cardigan to get an idea of the size of the sleeves. You can adjust the seam to wherever you would like the sleeves to sit comfortably for you.
Repeat the process for the last row to create the other armhole.
