The crochet cabbage patch stitch is a wonderfully textured, two-row repeating pattern! It only uses double crochet and chain stitches to create a design that I guess resembles cabbages!

In this tutorial, I’ll walk you through how to crochet the cabbage patch stitch step by step, with plenty of tips to help you feel confident using it in any project.

What is the Crochet Cabbage Patch Stitch?

The cabbage patch stitch is a dense and textured stitch pattern created over 2 rows. It involves groups of 4 double crochets in the first group. The second row features crossed double crochets, where you work a double crochet behind another stitch to create a crossover.

Don’t worry, it’s easier than it looks!

So once you’ve mastered the stitch, head over there to make it in any of the 15 sizes!

Step by Step Cabbage Patch Stitch Tutorial for Beginners

Supplies you’ll need

I used Amigo DK for the tutorial photos which is a lovely, category 3 (DK) weight yarn, but you can use any yarn that you like. If you’re a beginner I’d recommend using a category 4 weight yarn so you can see your stitches easily.

You’ll need a corresponding crochet hook for the yarn you choose. If you look at the ball band, it usually gives you the recommended hook size. The hook I’m using is a Dots hook from WeCrochet.

Here is a short description of how to make the cabbage patch stitch, followed by a more detailed explanation.

How to make the crochet cabbage patch stitch

  1. chain a multiple of 4+3
  2. work 4dc into the 5th ch from the hook.
  3. skip 3 chs, work 4dc into the next ch.
  4. rep step 3 until the last 2 chs, skip a ch, dc in last ch.
  5. turn to start the next row and ch3 (counts as st).
  6. skip next 3 sts, dc in next st, ch2.
  7. working behind the dc just made, dc in 1st of the skipped 3dc.
  8. rep steps 6 and 7 along the row, dc in last st, turn.
  9. ch3 (counts as st) work 4dc into each ch2-sp.
  10. dc in last st to finish.
  11. continue repeating steps 5-10.

And that’s it! Pretty simple! Let’s have a look at some pictures!

Top Tips for Crocheting the Cabbage Patch Stitch

  • Be careful not to pull the stitches too tight, especially your foundation chain.
  • Count your stitches regularly to make sure you haven’t accidentally added or missed stitches.
  • When working the double crochet stitch behind the other stitches, take your time and try to keep your tension even. It will feel awkward to start with but just keep practising.
  • Make a decent sized sample to ensure you master the stitch before using it in a pattern.
