Pattern for: Happy Hearts Crochet Sweater
Difficulty level: Intermediate – but definitely something an adventurous beginner could do!
Stitches used: single crochet and double crochet stitches

Let’s start by organising and ordering our yarn:
Yarn
This sweater pattern is worked using 2 different yarn colours that alternate to create the stunning colour sequence.
Yarn A: Mellowspun DK, 100% Acrylic, 260m/284yds/100g
Yarn B: Prism DK, 100% Acrylic, 265m/290yds/100g
These are a category 3 light weight yarn which is what gives this top its shape and drape. Check out our handy yarn weight chart and guide to find out more about yarn weights and categories.
Here are the colour combinations I used for my adult sweaters to give you more colour inspiration: Mellowspun Cream and Prism Succulent; Mellowspun Dove and for Yarn B here I used a beautiful tweed! It’s City Tweed DK in Rasperry Gelato
Yarn Substitutes
You can use any yarn that you like bearing in mind that you need to make sure you meet the gauge. Some other great options are:
Solid Colour Yarn A:
Premier Anti-Pilling Everyday DK, 100% Acrylic, 250m/273yds/100g
Multi Colour Yarn B:
Premier Colorfusion DK, 100% Acrylic, 298m/325yds/100g
Sizing and Yarn Quantities
Sizes: XS (S, M, L, XL) (2XL, 3XL, 4XL, 5XL)
To fit chest size: 30 (34, 38, 42, 46) (50, 54, 58, 62) inches
Finished sweater circumference: 32 (36, 40, 44, 48) (52, 56, 60, 64) inches

The following yarn amounts are estimated as a total as the pattern is written, with a neck rib band and worked to the length of body with a bottom band and long sleeves with cuffs as in the pattern.
Sweater Yarn Amounts
Yarn A: 1276 (1392, 1523, 1682, 1827)(2016, 2262, 2509, 2842) yards
Balls of recommended yarn: 5 (5, 6, 6, 7) (7, 8, 9, 10) balls
Yarn B: 232 (261, 305, 363, 406)(450, 522, 595, 696) yards
Balls of recommended yarn: 1 (1, 2, 2, 2)(2, 2, 3, 3) balls
There are numerous options for adding length to the sweater body, cuff and sleeves to make it perfect for you but make sure to order plenty of yarn if you are making adjustments to the pattern.

Other Materials
Along with your yarn, you will need the following:
- A 3.5mm(E) and 4.5mm(G+) crochet hook or hook needed to meet gauge
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
- Stitch markers
Overlay Mosaic Crochet Technique
Before we chat about the customisation options you might want to add to your sweater let’s look at the technique we use in the sweater yoke (the circular part at the top with all the colours) in case you haven’t done it before.
Firstly, I promise it’s easier than it looks!
We are using overlay mosaic crochet worked in rounds, so that means that not only do you only use 1 colour of yarn per round but that you can also carry your yarn at the back of your work.
So yep! That means no ends to weave in! It’s worth trying just for that don’t you think?!
The only things we need are US single crochet (UK double crochet) and US mosaic double crochet (UK mosaic treble crochet) stitches to create the patterns.
We change colour every round and we work either a single crochet into the back loop only of the stitch, or we work a mosaic double crochet stitch into the front loop of the stitch 2 rows or rounds below. This is all explained in much more detail in our mosaic crochet tutorial.

Mosaic Crochet Charts
The other important aspect of this technique is learning how to read a mosaic crochet chart. Again, they aren’t as complicated as they look and you’ll pick it up in no time!
Another thing to know though is that you don’t have to read the charts to make the pattern! Each round is written out in full if you prefer to follow that way 🙂

Making Your Valentines Crochet Sweater Perfect For You
Although the garment comes in so many sizes, there are still some things you can easily do to adjust it to fit you perfectly. I suggest choosing the garment chest size that you’d feel most comfortable wearing and then checking ‘customisation’ below for details of how you can adjust various parts.
Once you have chosen the correct chest size you’d like to make, the rest of the design is easy to adjust to fit as you would like it to. As you can see from all the versions I made there are so many ways to adapt it!
The Sweater is designed to have a small amount of ease all over with straight sleeves. The garment is worked from the top down so it is simple to change the length of both the Body and the Sleeves as you’d like.
BODY FIT
Proportion of Back and Front Stitches
The pattern is written to have the Front measure 2 inches bigger than the Back for a better fit over the bust.
If you would like more room at the Front then you can work less stitches for the Back and more for the Front as desired. Every 10 sts will adjust by 2 inches. The great thing about the top down construction means you can try this on and adjust to suit you perfectly.
Sleeve Armhole Depth
You can adjust the armhole by working more or less Back Short rows. Each row will add another stitch to the armhole and you can continue to adjust until you have the perfect fit.
Before adjusting the armhole I would recommend blocking the Yoke to see how that changes the overall fit.
LENGTH
Main Body Length: To adjust the length, you can work more or less rounds of the Body as you like before adding the Bottom Rib. If you don’t want a Bottom rib then work the Body to the final length you desire and fasten off.
Bottom Rib: you can adjust the Bottom Rib length by working more or less stitches in the Join as You Go Method.
Sleeve Length: You can adjust the Sleeves by working as many or as few rounds of the Sleeves before adding the Sleeve Cuff if desired. If you don’t want a Sleeve Cuff then work the Sleeves to the final length you desire and fasten off.
Make sure to work a matching number of rounds for each sleeve.
Pattern Gauge
Gauge: 20 sts and 18 rounds over sc in blo = 4″ x 4″ / 10cm by 10cm
Making a crochet gauge swatch is important when crocheting projects like garments to ensure that it ends up the desired size.
If you’d like to work a swatch ahead of purchasing the pattern then you can this as follows:
Foundation Chain: Using the larger hook, ch45, taking care not to twist, ss in 1st ch to join. [45]
Round 1: sc in each ch around, ss in 1st to join.
Round 2: ch1, sc in blo of each st around, ss in 1st to join.
Repeat Round 2 until you until you have enough to measure and be sure your gauge is correct.
