It’s no secret that there’s nothing I love more than a simple blanket bursting with colour but with the easiest of stitches to relax and unwind to. For me it’s the ultimate in mindfulness and I just can’t get enough of it. I think for me it’s a relief from the technical and tricky designs that make my head hurt – grading garments and making intricate items for example.

So here we have a super simple free blanket pattern – The Happy Herringbone Blanket. I made it for my little boy as a play mat and he absolutely loves it and often uses it to nap under too. The herringbone stitch is so rarely used and in my opinion is so very beautiful. It gives such a lovely texture but is just as easy as working a htr (hdc US terms) you just have to pull through a loop sooner than you normally do.

The finished blanket measures 71cm by 93cm but is so easy to adapt to any size you’d like. It has two simple edges along the long sides and is finished off with some super chunky tassels.

The pattern is here free for everyone to enjoy. You can download a free PDF of the pattern and also find the yarn I used too:

Yarn

I used the wonderful Scheepjes Cahlista to make the blanket as it has the most beautiful drape and weight for blankets, especially if you plan to use them as a playmat too. I’ve already tried and tested ours and it washes brilliantly too so I don’t worry about it going outside and becoming all manner of tent type thing!

It’s 100% natural cotton, aran weight yarn with a rainbow of colours in the range. Scheepjes Cahlista has an optimised twist to reduce splitting whilst maintaining a soft drape.

To make the blanket you will need:
  • 6 x Scheepjes Cahlista – Mercury (074) – Yarn A
  • 3 x Scheepjes Cahlista – Old Lace (130) – Yarn B
  • 3 x Scheepjes Cahlista – Lemonade (403) – Yarn C
  • 3 x Scheepjes Cahlista – Royal Orange (189) – Yarn D
  • 1 x Scheepjes Cahlista – Sage Green (212) – Yarn E
  • 1 x Scheepjes Cahlista – Caramel (506) – Yarn F
  • 1 x Scheepjes Cahlista – Lime Juice (392) – Yarn G

The fabulous folks at Deramores have put together a yarn pack (which also includes the free pattern PDF) so if you fancy it in the colours here then follow the link below:

Finding the right yarn for your projects can be tricky sometimes and depends on so many things like fibre content, yarn weight, budget, colour choices and more. I’ve put together a guide for the best yarn for crochet blankets to help you discover the things I’ve learnt over the years as both a designer and maker that help me choose the perfect one.
